UMPI offense hot in sweep

CASTINE – The University of Maine-Presque Isle scored 27 runs in two games to post a two-game sweep of Maine Maritime Academy on Sunday in college softball action from the weekend. UMPI took the first game 14-6 and picked up a 13-3 win in game two.

In the first game, Abbie Pickering and Sarah Gibb singled three times apiece, driving in two runs each to lead the Owls.

Heather Norsworthy added an RBI single and a double for Presque Isle. Michelle Young singled twice and knocked in a pair.

Kristi Cooper and Vicki Jones had two singles each for the Mariners. Stacey Ryan hit a two-run homer in the first inning.

In game two, Michelle Young doubled twice, singled and drove in two runs, leading the Owls.

Norsworthy hit three singles and knocked in a run for UMPI. Pickering added two singles, a double and two runs batted in.

Becky Kelso registered three singles for Maine Maritime. Vicki Jones added a two-run single.

Monks capture St. Joe’s tourney

At Standish, St. Joseph’s College won the Annual St. Joseph’s College Softball Invitational tournament it hosted on Sunday, going unbeaten in four games over two days. The tourney also featured Norwich of Northfield, Vt., Bowdoin College of Brunswick and the University of Maine-Farmington.

The Monks finished the tournament with a 6-0 win over Farmington on Sunday afternoon.

Heather Skolfield drove in two runs with a double and a single as St. Joe’s claimed the tournament title. Erica Golden added an RBI triple. Traci Mensch pitched a two hitter, running her record to 7-4.

Heather Marden took the loss for the Beavers.

Also on Sunday, The Monks downed Norwich 5-0 in the first game of the day. The Cadets responded with a 5-4 win over Bowdoin in the second game and the Polar Bears were dispatched by UM-Farmington in the third, 5-3.

In Sunday’s first game, Sarah Webster fired a three-hitter, striking out five as St. Joe’s knocked off the Cadets.

Webster added a double, single and a run batted in for the Monks. Sue Picard doubled and drove in a run. Nancy Pote added a two-run triple in the sixth to close the scoring.

In the second game, Norwich came up with four runs in the top of the seventh inning to overcome a 4-1 deficit and defeat Bowdoin.

Emilie Grenier led Bowdoin with a bases-loaded single that plated two runs. Emily Rizza added a triple and a single.

In the third game, Stacy Pinkham broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the seventh inning with an RBI single as the Beavers downed the Polar Bears.

Heather Wyman added a run-scoring single for Farmington.

Rizza plated a pair of runs with a double for Bowdoin.

On Saturday, St. Joseph’s defeated Bowdoin 5-4 in the first game of the day. UM-Farmington edged Bowdoin College 2-1 in the second game and Norwich downed the Beavers in the 2 p.m. contest. The Monks capped the day with a 9-1 win over the Cadets.

In Saturday’s first game, the Monks rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to defeat Bowdoin College of Brunswick.

Heather Skolfield ripped three singles and drove in two runs, including the tying run, for St. Joe’s. Sue Picard scored the winning run on a bases-loaded walk.

Erin McDonough singled to drive in a run for the Polar Bears.

In the second contest, Crystal Hulit allowed six hits and one run in seven innings as the Beavers knocked off Bowdoin.

Stacy Pinkham drove in a run with a single and Heather Marden had a sacrifice fly for Farmington.

Melissa Aikens doubled to drive in a run for the Polar Bears.

In the third game, Jennifer Barnett threw a four-hitter as the Cadets topped the Beavers.

Melissa Schatz doulbed and singled for Norwich. Barnett struck out six to improve to 7-5 on the season.

Stacy Pinkham singled twice for UMF.

In Saturday’s final game, St. Joseph’s came up with three runs in the top of the fifth inning to put the game out of reach for Norwich.

Janice DiNoble hammered a two-run triple in the fifth for the Monks. Nancy Pote added an RBI double.

Christina Kenny singled and scored a run for the Cadets.

Colby sweeps Middlebury

At Waterville Saturday, the White Mules used solid pitching to earn a doubleheader sweep of the Panthers of Middlebury, Vt., winning the first game 3-1 and the second game 3-0.

In the second game, Steph Greenleaf allowed two hits in the shutout. Marcy Wagner drove in two runs with a two-out double in the third inning and Melanie Morin drove in a run in the fifth. Stacey Gorski doubled for Middlebury.

In the first game, Wagner had two singles and drove in Colby’s third run. Steph Patterson’s sacrifice fly scored a run and Kim Chadwick added an RBI single. Brooke Fitzsimmons earned the win. Middlebury’s Michaela Love took the loss in both games.

Bates sweeps Thomas

At Waterville, Bates College of Lewiston pounded Thomas College for two games on Sunday, posting a sweep of the Terriers. The Bobcats shut out Thomas 16-0 in the first game and defeated the Terriers 10-4 in game two.

In the first game, Sarah DeRocker went 4-for-4 with two triples, a double, a single and a run batted in to lift Bates.

Becky Gasier pitched five innings of two-hit ball for the Bobcats. Emily Browher doubled and singled, driving in one run.

Kati Morrell had two hits for Thomas, both singles.

In the second game, Kathy Wagenseller ripped three singles for the Bobcats. DeRocker doubled, singled and drove in a run. Emily Browher, Nancy Morningstar and Emily Hoffman had two singles each.

Morrell singled and tripled for the Terriers and Heather Farrell added a single, double and one RBI.

UM-Farmington sweeps UMPI

The University of Maine-Farmington took four games from the University of Maine-Presque Isle over the weekend. The Beavers swept the Owls on Saturday with 6-4 and 8-0 victories. On Sunday, Farmington posted a 12-3 win in game one and edged the Owls 7-6 in the second game.

In Sunday’s first game, Brian Sawyer launched a three-run homer and added a single to lift the Beavers to the win.

Marc O’Clair ripped three singles for Farmington.

Josh Brown homered and singled for the Owls and Tom Petrillo added two singles.

In the second contest, Ryan Libby hit Farmington’s Nick Potts with a pitch with the bases loaded as the Beavers edged UMPI.

Nick Ayotte hit a three-run homer for the Beavers and Jason Cushman added a solo blast in the fourth inning. Sawyer doubled and singled.

Brown singled twice and doubled for the Owls.

In Saturday’s first game, the Beavers scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to pick up the win.

Mike Fullerton’s sixth home run of the season ended the game for Farmington. Nick Ayotte added two singles.

Andrew Feeney singled three times for the Owls and Josh Morse had a two run double in the fourth inning.

In the second game, Brian Cox struck out six to blank UMPI.

Fullerton added a two-run homer for the Beavers in the third inning and later ripped a double. Nick Potts contributed a two-run double.

Husson takes four from Thomas

At Bangor, Husson College won all four of its games with Thomas College this weekend, capturing two wins on Saturday and two more on Sunday. On Saturday, the Braves picked up 9-5 and 12-2 wins. On Sunday, Husson downed the Terriers 17-1 and 7-6.

In Sunday’s finale, Chris Pickering hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh, capping a four-run rally as Husson completed the sweep.

Dan Curtis finished the day with two singles and two runs batted in for the Braves. Barrett Williams added an RBI double.

Geoff Burnham doubled, scored two runs and drove in four for the the Terriers of Waterville. Scott Corriveau singled, doubled and scored twice.

In Sunday’s first game, the Braves pounded out 19 hits in just four innings to down Thomas College.

Jason Cyr, Pickering and Curtis had three hits apiece for Husson, and each drove in two runs. Don Sawyer had two hits and scored three times. Williams and Chris Morris each had two hits and drove in two runs.

Scott Sibley doubled, singled and drove in a run for Thomas.

In Saturday’s first game, Curtis and Sawyer drove in three runs each to lead the Braves.

Sawyer registered three singles and scored two runs and Curtis doubled twice and singled for the winners. Aaron Largay homered, doubled and drove in two runs.

Danny Poirier singled twice and scored two runs for the Terriers.

In Saturday’s second game, Cyr homered and singled to drive in four runs and lead Husson.

John Montgomery singled three times, drove in two runs and scored twice for the Braves. Largay doubled twice and scored three runs.

Chad Boyd doubled to drive in a run for Thomas.

Colby splits with Middlebury

At Waterville Saturday, John Lord hit a grand slam and added a two-run double and a single to help the White Mules cruise to a 13-6 victory in the second game of a doubleheader against the Panthers. Middlebury won the first game 2-1.

In the second game, Matt Smith also homered for Colby. Middlebury’s Ethan Mark doubled. Brian DiBello picked up the win and Tyler Conrad took the loss.

In the opener, Matt Blake drove in the game-winning run for the Panthers with a single to score John Dickie in the sixth inning. Andy Tripp tied the game for the Mules when he hit an RBI single in the fifth.
