RUMFORD — A 7-year-old boy found dead at the bottom of a private pool was apparently trying to retrieve his toys from the water when he fell in, police said.
The death of Zachary Sorenson was an accidental drowning, the state Medical Examiner’s Office ruled.
Police Lt. Wayne Gallant said Zachary had been playing with friends near the pool earlier in the day Monday but then returned alone.
“Maybe he slipped,” Gallant said Tuesday. “Maybe he hit his head.”
A plastic shovel and pail, like those used by children at the beach, was found in the pool.
Zachary was a first-grader at Rumford Elementary School.
