WASHINGTON — U.S. Reps. John Baldacci and Tom Allen Wednesday announced the winning selections for Maine in “An Artistic Discovery: A Congressional Art Competition.” Two pieces of artwork — one from each of Maine’s congressional districts — were selected April 3. They will hang in the U.S. Capitol for one year, along with selections from other congressional districts.
The winner from Maine’s first congressional district is Colin McNamee, a junior at Berwick Academy. His untitled oil painting will be on display for the next year, along with second district winner Roxanne Guilford’s charcoal drawing, titled “Photosynthesis.” Guilford is a junior at Bangor High School.
“This art competition offers Maine high school students an opportunity to display their creative talents and to represent our state in an important way,” Baldacci and Allen said in a joint statement. “This is an exciting chance for the young people of Maine to be recognized for their artistic abilities. We want to thank everyone who submitted works of art and congratulate Colin and Roxanne for their outstanding entries. It will be an honor to point out their artwork to other members of Congress and to constituents touring the Capitol.”
Baldacci and Allen also thanked Jodie Lane, Deborah McLean and everyone associated with the Maine College of Art in Portland, which helped conduct the competition and display the artwork. All submissions were displayed at the Institute of Contemporary Art at MECA from March 26 to April 3.
