BURLINGTON, Vt. – Jaime Bergin pitched a four-hitter in Sunday’s first game, striking out eight, as Vermont ended the University of Maine softball team’s postseason hopes with a 1-0 win.
The Black Bears came back to take the nightcap 3-0, sending coach Janet Anderson into retirement on a winning note, but Towson earned the last America East playoff spot by sweeping Drexel Sunday afternoon.
In the first game, Maggie Tiernan delivered the only run with an RBI single in the sixth off loser Jen Burton. Tiernan finished with a double and two singles for Vermont.
Karyn McMullin doubled for the Bears.
In the second game, Sara Jewett rapped a two-run double and an RBI single as Maine prevailed. Carrie Green fired a four-hitter to earn the win.

St. Joseph’s wins MAC title
At Standish, St. Joseph’s College won the Maine Athletic Conference women’s softball tournament Saturday to advance to the NAIA Northeast Regional in Philadelphia.
The Monks captured the title with a 6-1 win over Husson College of Bangor in Saturday’s second game. Husson had advanced to the title game with a 2-1 win over the University of New England of Biddeford in Saturday’s first game.
In the second game, freshman Sarah Webster pitched a two-hitter to win her 15th consecutive game as the Monks won the championship.
Janice DiNoble tripled to drive in two runs for the Monks and added a single. Erica Golden and Amy Deschaines had two hits each.
Nicole Mitchell ripped an RBI single for the Braves.
In the first game, junior Kelly Dow pitched the Braves into the championship game by tossing a four-hitter.
Angie Brawn launched a solo home run in the fourth inning to provide the winning run for Husson. Sami Hibbard added two singles.
Amanda Stevens hit a single and double for the Nor’easters.

Colby sweeps Bates
At Lewiston, Kim Chadwick registered six hits in two games Saturday as the White Mules swept the Bobcats. Colby of Waterville won the first game 14-8 and took a 6-4 win in the second.
In the first game, Chadwick singled twice, doubled, tripled and drove in three runs to lift Colby.
Marcy Wagner slammed a three-run homer for the White Mules. Steph Patterson and Becky Pollard each had two singles and a double.
Anna Wulffleff had three singles and two RBIs for Bates.
In the second game, Chadwick had a two-run single and an RBI single to pace the Mules.
Steph Greenleaf, Patterson, Marcy Wagner and Lizzie Parks had two singles Wulfleff singled and doubled for the Bobcats. Peg Ficks added a pair of singles.

At Oneonta, N.Y., Sunday, Tufts’ Steve Lapham pitched seven innings of solid relief to earn his first save of the season and help lead Tufts to its second Cooperstown “Fame” Tournament title.
Josh Marks went 4-for-4 with two RBIs while Zack Brown singled twice with two RBIs. It was Tufts ninth straight victory.
Andrew Tripp led the White Mules with a double and single.
Colby took a 2-0 lead in the first after Jonathan Lord hit a two-run double, but the Jumbos came back with five runs in the next three innings.
On Saturday, Colby won a spot in the championship game with a 10-7 come-from-behind victory.
Tripp highlighted a five-run rally in the seventh with a two-run triple.
St. John Fisher catcher Geoff Osborne stole home in the sixth to break a 4-4 tie, but it would be the its last lead of the day.

St. Joseph’s sweeps Thomas
At Standish, the St. Joseph’s College Monks pounded out 26 hits to sweep a doubleheader from Thomas College of Waterville 11-4 and 6-1.
In the first game, Casey Roy of Biddeford had four hits, including a three-run homer in the fifth inning, and seven RBIs to lead the Monks to the win Sunday.
Ben Gosselin had three singles and an RBI while Steve Osborne hit a double and a single.
Tom Ouellette led the Terriers with three hits.
In the second game, Osborne and Casey Roy each singled twice for the Monks. Freshman Dan Poirier paced Thomas with two singles.
