Archrivals Brewer, Bangor split contests> Witch hitters spark upset of Rams

BREWER – They hit the ball, scored runs, held on to the lead, pitched well, played sparkling defense – just about everything Brewer softball coach Kelly Cookson could have asked for.

And the Witches earned their biggest win of the season by beating the Bangor softball team 10-6 Tuesday night at Coffin Field.

The Rams fall to 6-3. Brewer, now 6-4, has won four straight.

“The mood is super,” said senior Hannah Barnes, who singled and scored a run. “Everyone contributed, everyone stayed in it. We’re jazzed now.”

While the Witches got a much-needed defensive boost after a run of games in which they had struggled in the field, Brewer got it done with the bats.

The Witches pounded out 13 hits – as did the Rams – and found plenty of gaps in the outfield. Every Brewer player had at least one hit and three were multiple hitters.

“We can hit, we can hit,” Cookson said. “Finally, the hitting has started to go. The best thing about this is knowing that all the kids, through the lineup, contributed.”

The Witches took a 1-0 lead into the third inning, when they batted around and emerged with four more runs. Allison Wing, Sarah Smith, and Alison Strang each hit RBI singles in the inning, and Wing scored on an error.

Smith had a productive night, driving in four runs on two singles and a triple in the fifth inning that scored Barnes and Erika Corey.

“Toward the beginning of the season I wasn’t making contact and in my last game I struck out three times,” Smith said. “I guess we’ve been practicing a lot.”

The hitting practice showed. Corey went 2-for-4 with a single and an RBI double and scored three runs. Wing finished with two singles and two RBIs. Katie LaChance drove in two runs on a single and a fielder’s choice.

But Bangor finally got its offense going, too. Down 9-0, the Rams staged a comeback in the fifth inning powered by Jamie Kenny’s three-run double. Danielle Pinkerton also hit an RBI single in the inning. Bangor got back two more runs in the sixth on an RBI single by Kori Dionne and a groundout that plated Kara Holland.

Dionne, Jessica Lewis, and Kerri Tuck each recorded two singles. Kenny finished with three doubles.

“Jamie’s doing the job for us,” Rams coach Lisa Richards said. “We just need to make sure we have people on base when she bats through.”

Bangor threatened again in the seventh, but Brewer’s defense held the Rams. With the bases loaded and one out, pitcher Tami Corey caught a line drive that Lewis hit right back to her for the second out. Right fielder Jenny Higgins ended the game with a running catch for the flyout.

Cookson said she was also pleased with Tami Corey’s effort against the explosive Rams.

“I just wanted to keep them low, so my team could field them,” Corey said. “I wanted them low and inside.”
