Former Woodland athletic director and current coach Rich Nutter is resigning his social studies teaching position at the high school, but is not giving up his varsity tennis and volleyball coaching duties.

At least not yet.

Nutter, who has coached the school’s tennis team since 1977 and the girls volleyball team since 1988, now lives in Bangor and would like to eventually get a coaching position in the area.

Nutter’s wife accepted a position at Husson College last year, prompting the Nutters to move to Bangor this year.

Nutter, who was Woodland’s A.D. for 22 years (1973-95), plans to keep coaching at the high school for the forseeable future and will also continue serving as an active Eastern Maine high school basketball official, a job he has held since the early 1970’s.

“I’m not sure what the future will bring. At this time, I’m unemployed as far as having a full-time position, but I’m hoping to find something in the Bangor area,” Nutter explained.

As expected, former Hermon basketball standout Rick Sinclair’s nomination to replace retiring coach Clayton Blood was approved by the Hermon School Committee last week.

The 25-year-old Sinclair, who starred at Hermon and went on to become a 1,000-point scorer at Husson College, will make his varsity coaching debut for the Hawks next winter after having spent last season as Hermon’s freshman boys coach.

Sinclair graduated from Hermon in 1992 and Husson in 1996.

Bangor High swimmer Rachel Rubin and Brewer swimmer Josh Kingsbury have been named the 1999 winners of the Irene Palmer scholarship.

Rubin and Kingsbury will receive a $300 credit to the bookstore of the colleges in which they plan to enroll. Rubin will attend Wheaton College in Norton, Mass., and Kingsbury will attend Bowdoin College in Brunswick.

The scholarship, which is open to Penobscot Valley Conference swimmers and divers who plan to continue their education after high school, was established in 1998 honor of the late wife of longtime PVC swimming official Norm Palmer.
