Stand-Down on Saturday for homeless veterans

BANGOR — The third annual Maine Homeless Veterans Stand-Down will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 22, at the old Bangor National Guard Armory on Main Street. The purpose of the Stand-Down concept is to offer homeless veterans a “hand up,” not a “handout.”

Veterans who attend the Stand-Down will be afforded opportunities to help themselves by visiting various booths including employment services, veterans’ benefits, mental health and community services, and housing information. The veterans will also be offered haircuts, ditty bags of toiletries and clothing.

They will be assigned to squads and will be guided through the various locations within the armory where they can also obtain medical health screenings and receive information regarding eyeglasses and hearing aids. A continental breakfast, hot lunch and meal coupons will be offered to each participating veteran.

Disabled American Veterans-sponsored vans will pick up veterans at 7 a.m. at the Vet Centers in Portland, Springvale, Lewiston, Caribou and the Bread of Life Ministries in Augusta. For more information, call 800-827-1000.
