BANGOR – While Monday’s rain pelted the softball field at Bangor High School, the Rams hauled out the batting tees and screens at an indoor practice to work on their struggling offense.

On Tuesday, under sunny skies and with a blustery wind, Bangor pounded out 15 hits to end its regular season with a 9-6 victory over Brewer.

The Witches, who are now 9-6 and were No. 8 in the most recent Heal Points, face Hampden Academy today in an effort to hold onto a playoff spot. The Rams, who were No. 6 in the Heal Points, will wait to hear who they play in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Maine Class A playoffs.

Senior Jamie Kenny was one of the biggest beneficiaries of the indoor practice, going 4-for-4 with two singles, two doubles and two RBIs.

“We worked on hitting and that’s all we did,” she said. “I hadn’t been hitting as well lately so it really paid off for me.”

With the game tied in the fifth inning, Kenny lofted her second double of the game to left-center to drive in pinch runner Jlynn Frazier. Kerri Tuck scored on a wild pitch and Meghan Huckins singled to plate Kenny. Huckins came home on an error in the next at-bat for a 7-3 Bangor lead.

Kenny and Danielle Pinkerton both singled and scored in the next inning.

Tuck also had a successful game, with three singles and a sacrifice fly in the third inning that plated Rachel Kelly.

Bangor freshman pitcher Jenny Jimmo, now 7-1, recorded another strong outing. Kenny, who catches for Jimmo and fellow freshman pitcher Shelby Soohey, said Jimmo’s attitude had made her successful this season.

“She’s very positive,” Kenny said. “There was a poke to center field in the fifth inning she just had a look in her eye, like she wasn’t going to let it get to her.”

Jimmo was a little more critical of her own eight-strikeout, two-walk effort.

“I was working on trying to keep the ball low in the strike zone,” she said. “It didn’t go that well, but we played well as a team. Tha bats came through for us and that helps.”

Brewer scored four of its runs on two big hits. In the fourth inning, Sarah Smith hit a double to a gap in center field that plated Allison Wing and Erika Corey. Wing and Hannah Barnes scored on a triple by Alison Strang and a single by Jenny Higgins drove in Strang.

“Sarah’s been clutch for us all season and every time we’ve needed a big hit she’s gotten it for us,” Brewer coach Kelly Cookson said.

“We just didn’t make the routine defensive plays today,” Cookson added.

Cara McEwen added an RBI single in the fourth that drove in pinch runner Erica Brooks.

Wing was the only repeat hitter for the Witches. She singled in the first inning and added the fourth-inning double.
