ROCKLAND — Michael Chasse, a Supermax inmate who discharged a homemade powder bomb and escaped from police custody during his trial last fall, was indicted by a Knox County grand jury Wednesday for tampering with a prison fire suppression system.
His case was among 49 indictments handed up Wednesday by the grand jury, which deliberated 2 1/2 days.
Chasse was among three Maine Correctional Institution inmates accused of aggravated criminal mischief in the damage to a sprinkler head and fire suppression system at the Supermax prison in nearby Warren. Chasse, 24, Charles Miles, 19, and James Jolly, 22, were accused of damaging the sprinkler system on various days in April.
Chasse was sentenced in April to 12 years in prison for attacking Robert Cohen during a robbery attempt in Cohen’s Brewer home two years ago. Cohen is the brother of U.S. Defense Secretary William Cohen.
During Chasse’s trial last fall, he discharged a homemade powder bomb outside a courthouse in Dover-Foxcroft and fled his police escorts. He was recaptured five hours later.
Other indictments Wednesday ranged from sex crimes to writing bad checks.
Three were kept secret until the accused can be arrested. There were no no-bills, which means there were no cases considered that did not result in indictments.
