OLD TOWN — When the final bell rings Thursday at Old Town High School, it will mark the end of the 31-year career of Lionel Bishop, the school’s longtime assistant principal.
Bishop, 55, said he would remain in the school system part time as director of the adult education program. He attributed his longevity in the system to the quality of the educators and the students at the school.
“I’ve worked with many capable people, and the students here are great kids,” Bishop said. “Once you find a place you like where you feel comfortable, that makes it difficult to leave.”
Bishop served in many capacities during his tenure, including physical education teacher and health and family life teacher, before moving into administration in 1980. Active with the Maine Principals’ Association, Bishop also spent the first 13 years of his career as coach of the boys and girls swim teams as well as assistant coach of the football team.
Superintendent Owen Maurais said Tuesday that Bishop’s ability and “instant credibility” among parents and educators will be missed.
“He’s influenced many people by being the person he is,” Maurais said. “He’s committed and invested in helping students become successful.”
