Three suffer injuries in Madawaska collision

MADAWASKA — Three people suffered minor injuries late Wednesday afternoon in a near head-on collision that may have been caused by a driver losing control of his vehicle during a coughing episode.

Daniel Morin, 42, of Madawaska was treated for cuts and bruises at a Fort Kent Hospital after the 5:30 p.m. accident on Gagnon Road in Madawaska. Also suffering minor injuries were Jessica Cote, 18, and Renee Lagasse, 21, both of Madawaska.

Madawaska police Officer Oneil Clavette said Morin was southbound on Gagnon Road when he started coughing violently. His car drifted left into the oncoming lane, striking Cote’s northbound vehicle.

Both vehicles, Cote’s 1989 four-door sedan and Morin’s 1986 minivan, were destroyed. Cote’s car was estimated to have $8,000 damage to the front and driver’s side. Morin’s car was damaged in the same area and had about $6,000 damage.

Neither the driver nor Lagasse, who was a passenger in Cote’s car, was using a seat belt, said Clavettte. The accident happened about 2 1/2 miles south of the Route 1 intersection.
