BANGOR – If not for the race numbers pinned to their shorts and the cheering crowds lining the streets, it could have been just another day running on the roads for Louie and Joey Luchini.

The brothers train together every day in their hometown of Ellsworth. Sunday, they ran stride for stride for almost the entire race en route to first- and second-place finishes in the Walter Hunt Memorial 3K.

The 18-year-old Louie beat the 20-year-old Joey by two seconds, posting a time of 8 minutes, 44 seconds. They were followed closely by the man who coached them when they attended Ellsworth High, 35-year-old Andy Beardsley, who finished in 8:50.

The Ellsworth trio ran virtually uncontested the entire way. Fourth and fifth went to Justin Bates of Abbot (9:11) and Jason Hewitt (9:12) of Penobscot, respectively.

On the women’s side, Jo-Ann Nealey of Northport was a runaway winner, cruising to a 10:13 victory. Two-time defending champion Katrina Bisheimer of Bangor missed the starting gun but still managed to finish second in 10:57.

The race preceded the Fourth of July parade and followed its route, starting in front of the Dunkin’ Donuts in Brewer, progressing down Wilson Street, over the Joshua Chamberlain Bridge and down Main Street in Bangor. It finished over the footbridge near Pickering Square.

Louie and Joey Luchini said they had planned to run together, although they had hoped they wouldn’t have to lead until after the mile mark. But once the gun sounded, the only man that could stick with the brothers after the first half mile was Beardsley.

“[Running together] was the plan… until I slowed down and Louie went by me,” Joey joked, paying deference to his younger brother’s formidable racing creditentials. Louie, who graduated from high school in June, is considered one of the top five scholastic runners in the nation.

With their dark hair, slight builds and matching blue shorts, the Luchinis looked like mirror images of one another as they led Beardsley over the course. One spectator was overhead asking, “Are they twins?” It seemed natural that they would finish together.

But Beardsley wasn’t about to let his young charges get away that easily. As Louie began to put some distance on Joey heading down Main Street, Beardsley moved by Joey and gained several yards on him. He couldn’t hold his lead.

“At the beginning, as I was running behind them, I was watching them and getting a little nostalgic instead of focusing on the race. When I went by Joey, I tried to make it a race,” Beardsley said.

Louie won 14 and Joey won nine state high school titles in cross country and track under Beardsley’s tutelage.

The brothers said they may run a few more road races this summer, but their main focus is building a mileage base. Louie is preparing for his freshman cross country season at Stanford. Last year, Joey ran cross country at the University of Southern Maine.

“This didn’t really fit in to our training schedule – we just did it for fun,” Louie said.

The race was a short speed workout for Nealey, who said she prefers racing distances longer than 10K. The 38-year-old Belfast High coach last won the race in 1996.

Bisheimer said she thought Nealey would probably finish ahead of her, but that was virtually guaranteed when she missed the starting gun. Race director Dave Torrey had to delay the start five minutes to allow a train to pass, and while the runners were waiting on the line Bisheimer decided to stay loose by jogging to a Mobil station. On her way back to the line, she met the entire field running toward her.

“I didn’t know what to do. So I just [ran back to the line] and popped in to the race,” Bisheimer said.

Nealey had her third child, Drew, two years ago and this is her first summer of serious racing since his birth. Her other two children, 9-year-old Megan and 8-year-old Jillian, also competed in the race.

Nealey and her husband Dale, who ran alongside Jillian, coach their daughters in summer track.

Tina Michaud of Presque Isle was third in 11:18, followed by 14-year-old Oriana Farley of Hampden (11:19). MaryBeth Gorey of Fredericton, New Brunswick (11:24), 44, took fifth overall and earned the masters’ title.

Newell Lewey of Veazie turned in an outstanding performance in the master’s division, finishing 11th overall in 9:28.

The 41-year-old said he plans to get better with age.

“I ran this race in the exact same time last year. My goals still haven’t changed. I still want to set PR’s [personal records],” he said.
