Old Town to play for state crown

BUXTON – Old Town forced a second game in the championship round in the Senior League softball tournament on Wednesday, rallying for a 4-3 win over Auburn with three runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Old Town handed Auburn its first loss in the double-elimination tournament and the two teams will face off again today in Buxton for the state title.

With two outs in the top of the seventh and runners on first and second, Old Town’s Megan King drilled a two-run double to tie the score. After King took third base on an error, Jessica Paul lined an RBI double just inside the third-base line, scoring King with the go-ahead run.

Old Town coach Clint Higgins was impressed with the persistance his team showed to win the game.

“It gives you a heart attack,” he said, “but they know how to do it with two outs.”

Old Town advanced to the state tournament with another late-inning rally, erasing a 4-2 defecit to defeat Bangor in the regional championship game.

Natasha Hussey helped the Old Town offense with a single and triple, driving in a run in the second inning. Erika Perry doubled, singled and scored the tying run on King’s double. Mary Randall fired a six-hitter.

Jenn Lee slapped an RBI double and a single to pace Auburn. Sarah Nadeau added a triple.
