Tourists don’t help

I would like to respond to the letter by Doug Thomas (BDN, Aug. 5). I will add this to what he so accurately stated.

It’s a shame our governor and a few more seem to think the tourists are the answer to Maine’s money problems. The people who live and work here year round must be assured there will be work for us. I am sure the tourists don’t really care if we have jobs or not, and people who live here can’t even get to see a lot of scenic beauty because of overcrowding from tourists.

When the tourist season is over in towns such as Bar Harbor and Camden, businesses close their doors and board up their windows, so what good does that money do the state?

When are the people at the top going to look at the whole state? Many workers are losing their jobs. In Millinocket and East Millinocket two mills are trying desperately to keep people in jobs, and where is our govenror? Serving shakes and sundaes at McDonald’s. I hope he believes it does a lot for his self-image. I can see a lot of other things that need attention.

If this state stays livable and workable for everyone, we might see a great reduction in the wasteful spending of welfare as we know it. Gail E. Ray Milbridge
