LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The University of Maine tied Holy Cross 1-1 in the championship game of the Bronc Fall Classic Sunday but Holy Cross won the men’s soccer tourney based on goal differential.

The Black Bears defeated Rider 3-1 in Saturday’s game. The Crusaders beat St. Joseph’s University 4-1 Saturday and Rider topped St. Joseph’s Sunday.

In Sunday’s game, Maine’s Aaron Benjamin scored with 13 seconds left in regulation to tie the game and Aaron Weymouth made five saves on 11 shots. Lawrence Shelley scored for the Crusaders and Chuck Chiesa stopped 10 of the 21 shots he faced.

In Saturday’s game, Benjamin scored on a crossing pass from Ricky Brown to tie the game at 1-1. Brown broke the tie with an assist from Carson Weeks and Benjamin added another goal, also off a Brown assist. Aaron Weymouth made one save on nine shots.

Rider’s Steve Jackson scored an unassisted goal 8:50 into the game and Keith Richardson stopped seven of the 12 shots he faced.

Unity 1, UM-Fort Kent 0

At Fort Kent Saturday, Kieran Kelly knocked in the game-winner at the 35:00 mark of the first half to lift the Rams.

Jesse Hartson assisted on Kelly’s goal. Jeremy Leifert stopped eight of the 12 shots he faced for 2-0 Unity.

David Pelkey made five saves on eight shots for the Bengals.

Johnson and Wales wins Kickoff

At Presque Isle, Johnson and Wales College of Providence, R.I., won the Bradley’s Kickoff Classic here Sunday by edging the University of Maine-Presque Isle 1-0 in Sunday’s championship game.

Chris Lefave scored an unassisted goal with 18:02 left in the game for J and W. Todd Humphreys saved one of four shots.

For the UMPI Owls, Jon Cole made eight saves on 10 shots.

In the consolation game, Thomas College of Waterville ripped UM-Machias 9-1 behind a three-goal effort from Lucas Levesque.

Richard Kelley, Jose Palladino, and Mike Largay each scored two goals for the Terriers. Ryan Conley made two saves on three shots.

For the Clippers, Mike Spry scored the lone goal and Corey McFadden saved two of six shots.

On Saturday, Lefave scored five goals and assisted on two others to lead Johnson and Wales to a 7-1 win over Thomas.

Chris Reinhart had two goals and two assists. Humphreys saved two of three shots.

In the other game, UMPI edged the UMM Clippers 3-2 on a goal by Tony Caristi with 22:51 left in the game and an assist from Nick Lyons. Shawn Breton and Andrew Robinson each scored one goal. Cole made seven saves on 14 shots.

Jamie Beckwith scored on a penalty kick and Neil Redman scored unassisted for UM-Machias. McFadden made 12 saves on 17 shots.

Women’s soccer

Black Bears lose two

At Orono, Lisa Rinaldi recorded two assists to help St. John’s to a 4-1 victory over Maine to win the Black Bear Invitational Sunday. Miami beat Maine 2-0 Saturday. New Hampshire topped Miami 2-1 Sunday and St. John’s defeated New Hampshire 2-1 in the opening game of the tourney.

In Sunday’s game, Jen Rugsley, Joanna Dawson, Heather Cook and Marissa Stork all tallied goals for the Red Storm. Three St. John’s goalies faced a total of five shots with only one save. Maine’s Nikki Reed scored an unassisted goal with 4:40 left in the game and Naomi Welsh and Heidi Dombrock combined for nine saves on 23 shots.

In Saturday’s game, Jordan Sims and Allison McWhinney scored goals for the Hurricanes. Alexis MacKenzie assisted on Sims’ goal and Lisa Gomez was credited with the assist on McWhinney’s score. Rachel Elsbey stopped all three shots she faced for the 2-0 ‘Canes. Karyn McMullin made 12 saves on 25 shots for the 0-2 Black Bears.

UM-Farmington earns two wins

At Thomas College in Waterville, Rebecca Brooks scored three goals to lead the Beavers to a 4-1 victory over Mt. Ida College of Newton, Mass. Sunday. UMF topped Johnson State of Vermont 5-2 in Saturday’s game.

In Sunday’s game, Megan Woodcock added another goal and Jodi Dodge and Shannon Mailhot tallied an assist apiece. Pam Goyette and Allison Pontbiand combined for three saves. Laura Halfpenny scored a goal for 1-1 Mt. Ida.

On Saturday, Morgan Titus led UMF to a season-opening win with two goals and two assists. Vicki Cyr scored a goal and had an assist. Woodcock and Michelle Blanchard also scored for the Beavers. Goyette and Pontbiand combined for two saves. Amy Turlotte and Jacki Barresi scored for 0-1 Johnson State and Tiffany Corey had eight saves.

Thomas drops two

At Waterville, Arynne Audy scored twice to help Johnston State cruise to a 5 -1 victory over the Terriers Sunday and Mt. Ida’s Laura Halfpenny recorded three goals in a 4-1 win over Thomas Saturday.

On Sunday, Valene Debrita, Erin Enberg and Amy Turcotte added goals for Johnson State and Megan Brown made three saves on six shots. Thomas’ Jen McNally scored and Angela Stevens stopped 15 of the 20 shots she faced.

In Saturday’s game, Mt. Ida’s Lindsey Correia also scored while Christina McCory made seven saves on 13 shots. McNally scored at 23:22 in the first for Thomas College and Stevens made five saves on nine shots.
