Beardsley, Edgecomb take wins in Fox Run> 17th event raises funds for cancer research

HAMPDEN – Whenever Andy Beardsley and Jeremy Lisee meet in road races, it’s sure to be a battle.

Beardsley usually wins, Lisee concedes. But the two Down Easters still make for a good matchup on the roads.

That’s how it went during Sunday’s 17th annual Terry Fox Run, as Ellsworth’s Beardsley held off Milbridge resident Lisee for his first win in the charity 5-kilometer race.

Beardsley crossed the finish line at the Best Western White House Inn with a time of 16 minutes, 1 second. Lisee clocked in 16 seconds later.

Angela Edgecomb of Littleton ran a 19:56 for her first Terry Fox victory in her second year of running in the event. Calgary, Alberta, native Katrina Bisheimer, who had a three-year win streak before the race, finished in 20:48.

The race is named for Terry Fox, who was a Canadian athlete who ran on one good leg and one artificial leg and attempted a transcontinental run in 1980 to raise funds for cancer research. Fox ran 3,339 miles before he was striken by cancer for the second time. He died on June 28, 1981.

Beardsley and Lisee may be competitors on the course, but like most of the runners in Sunday’s race, they are united by the disease that has touched both of their lives. Beardsley’s mother died of cancer seven years ago and his grandmother recently fought cancer. Lisee’s mother also dealt with cancer and last year he dedicated his race to her.

All proceeds from Sunday’s race will go to the Breast Cancer Prevention Trial being conducted at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.

Bucksport’s Leona Clapper, a member of the Maine Running Hall of Fame who has participated in 16 of the 17 Terry Fox Runs, received her second Terry Fox Award before the race. Clapper is dealing with cancer for the second time in her life, but if anything was going to slow Clapper down, it was the weather.

“It was hotter out there than I thought it was going to be,” she said with a smile.

Lisee, last year’s winner, was at Beardsley’s shoulder until the 2 1/2-mile mark, when Beardsley pulled away.

But that’s pretty typical when the Down Easters have faced each other in the past.

“Jeremy and I have been running races together for a while and we’ve always battled,” Beardsley said. “We know each other and I think we give each other a good push.”

Edgecomb faced a struggle going against the speedy Bisheimer. Edgecomb said she wasn’t sure how she would do because she has focused most of her training this year on longer courses.

Edgecomb was right on Bisheimer for a mile into the race until Edgecomb passed her.

“When I went by her I made sure that I went by her fast,” Edgecomb said. “After that I didn’t look back.”

Members of the University of Maine hockey team that won the national championship ran in Sunday’s race. Redshirt freshman Gray Shaneberger finished in 21:44, the fastest time on the team.

“At first I wasn’t sure if I wanted to jog this or run,” he said. “But when I saw all the older people who were running, I thought, if they can do it so can I.”
