Tom Savage goal lifts Husson men past UMPI

PRESQUE ISLE – Tom Savage scored the only goal of the game with 10:04 left in the first half, lifting Husson College of Bangor to a 1-0 men’s soccer victory over the University of Maine-Presque Isle.

Savage’s goal came when made a long run down the left side and slammed a shot from just inside the 18-yard box.

Mark Cucinelli stopped four of six shots for the Braves. Jon Cole made 14 saves on 17 shots for the Owls.

St. Joseph’s 4, UM-Presque Isle 2

At Presque Isle Saturday, the Owls handed the Monks an own goal seven minutes into the match and St. Joseph’s ran off to a win in their season opener.

The Monks also had a goal and an assist from Jesse Beer. Leroy Pottinger and Jim Morgan scored goals and Ben Nugent contributed an assist.

Shawn Bertoni scored off a Tony Caristi assist and Nick Lyons scored unassisted for the 1-1 Owls.

Michael Bolanz made five saves on 12 shots for the Monks, while Jon Cole stopped four of the 11 shots he faced for the Owls.

St. Joseph’s 3, UMFK 1

At Fort Kent on Sunday, Leroy Pottinger scored two goals to help St. Joseph’s College of Standish improve to 2-0.

Mike Herrick provided one goal and one assist for the Monks, while Joe Mancini added an assist. Michael Bolanz made eight saves on 10 shots.

Drazen Jozic scored on a penalty kick for 0-3 UMaine-Fort Kent. Mark Brown made 10 saves on 19 shots.

Massachusetts 2, Maine 0

At Chicopee, Mass., on Saturday, the Minutemen scored a goal in each half while handing the Black Bears their first loss.

Adam Black and Kyle Biedenboch scored the goals for 3-2 UMass, which received five saves from Jeff Fowler while outshooting 1-1-1 Maine 18-7.

Aaron Weymouth made four saves for the Black Bears.

Depauw 1, Colby 0

At Waterville on Sunday, Chris Kessler scored 5:51 into the second half on an assist by J.R. Foster, lifting Depauw University (Ind.) to victory over Colby.

Depauw outshot Colby 13-7, with Adam Lux making three saves. Justin Amirault had five stops for the White Mules.

UM-Farmington 3, Castleton 0

At Castleton, Vt., on Saturday, Jeff Meinhart scored a pair of second-half goals to propel the University of Maine-Farmington to victory over Castleton State.

Sam An Dy cqscored the other goal for the Beavers on a penalty shot. Ben Rlowin made four saves on six shots.

Kyle Inglis made 13 saves on 16 shots for the hosts.

Thomas 5, Atlantic Union 0

At Waterville Sunday, Jose Palladino scored three goals to lead the Thomas College to victory in a penalty-filled game.

Seven yellow cards and one red were handed out. Lucas Levesque and Bangor’s Mike Largay each scored a goal. Ryan Conley saved three of six shots for 3-2 Thomas.

Edgar Santania made six saves on 19 shots for 1-2 Atlantic Union (Mass.).

Women’s soccer

UM-Presque Isle 4, Husson 0

At Presque Isle on Sunday, Heather Norsworthy scored two goals and Renee Martin provided one goal and one assist to pace the Owls.

Sarah Gibb scored the other goal for 2-2 UMPI, while Kerry Flanagin, Heather Von Oesen and Vanessa Cipriani notched one assist apiece. Devin Jewett and Stephanie Gagnon combined to make 14 saves on 14 shots.

Meghann Taylor made 13 saves on 20 shots for 1-2 Husson of Bangor.

UM-Farmington 2, UMPI 0

At Presque Isle on Saturday, Megan Woodcock broke a scoreless tie with 37:59 to play and assisted on Morgan Titus’ insurance tally 13 minutes later.

Jen Lovejoy added an assist for the 3-0 Beavers. Pam Goyette and Allison Pontbriand combined for eight saves on nine shots.

Devin Jewett made 13 saves on 16 shots for the Owls.

Maine 2, Marist 0

At Poughkeepsie, N.Y., on Sunday, Susan Day scored two goals during a 1-minute, 44-second span of the second half, lifting the Black Bears to their first win of the season.

Day scored unassisted goals at 68:11 and 69:55 for UMaine, now 1-4. Karen McMullin made four saves on 10 shots.

Melanie Nai and Alicia Merdinyan combined to make eight saves on 11 shots for 0-3-1 Marist.

Amherst 3, Colby 1

At Waterville on Saturday, Hallison Putnam scored two first-half goals to spark Amherst to victory over Colby.

Catherine Poor had the other goal for the 1-0 Lord Jeffs. Brooke Diamond made four saves on 13 shots.

Katie Rowen scored on a Jessie Knoll assist for the 0-1 White Mules. Abby Russell made eight saves, facing 28 shots.

Lyndon State 3, Thomas 0

At Lyndonville, Vt. Sunday, the Hornets received goals from three different players as they improved to 3-0.

Jill Gillardi, Jodi Raymond and Sara Bartlett scored for Lyndon State while Nikki Chrissikos scored the lone Terriers goal.

Catherine Paul stopped 16 of the 17 shots she faced for the Hornets and Angela Stevens made 13 saves on 29 shots for 0-3-1 Thomas College.

Unity 5, MMA 0

At Unity Sunday, Andrea York notched two unassisted goals to help the Rams roll over the Mariners of Castine.

Nikki Lazur, Jenn Noonan and Jenn Augustine each contributed a goal. Cristen Gallagher and Ashley Messner added assists for 2-1 Unity. Rom Harrison stopped one of the two shots she faced.

Tracy Forand made 10 saves on 18 shots for 0-1 Maine Maritime Academy.

Field hockey

Husson 4, Thomas 3

At Bangor High School Sunday, Husson College won its first game under new coach Ruth Fitzpatrick, beating Thomas College of Waterville in their mutual season opener.

The Braves scored all their goals in the first half, with Darby Smiley provided two goals and an assist. Dawn Doucette contributed a goal and an assist, whiel Yoko Egami had a goal and Dawn Eaton one assist.

Monica Cookson made eight saves on 11 shots.

Erin Lovley provided one goal and one assist for the Terriers, who rallied with three second-half goals. Kim Oleksiak and Kristin Clark scored goals, while Brandy Newby added an assist.

Ellen Prosser made six saves on 10 shots.
