ORONO – Maine women’s soccer coach Scott Atherley knew his Maine women would be under siege in the second half against Boston University Sunday.
Carolyn Fotiu’s first goal of the season had staked Maine to a 1-0 halftime lead.
The clearly superior Terriers made some tactical changes and outshot Maine 20-0 in the second half en route to a 2-1 triumph.
BU is 5-3 overall, 2-0 in America East. Maine is 1-7, 0-2.
BU”s Mary-Beth Magner equalized off an Alicia Waag cross 11:30 into the second half, her second of the year, and America East scoring leader Deidre Enos’ seventh provided the well-deserved game-winner off a Tiffany Chag flick-on with 14:24 left.
“Their athleticism and technical prowess took over in the second half. Rhode Island beat us 7-0 and BU beat Rhode Island 7-4. Our players have made tremendous progress psychologically and tactically over the last few weeks,” Atherley said.
Magner said Maine effectively compacted its defense in the first half, making it difficult to break through.
“And we weren’t getting numbers up into the attack. In the second half, the halfbacks came up to help the forwards. We also won the 50-50 balls and that had been a problem for us in the first half,” said Magner.
In addition, the Terriers changed to a possession game instead of lofting long crosses into the teeth of the Maine defense.
On her goal, Magner said Waag’s cross “hit off someone on their team” and landed at her feet.
“It was a little crazy in there. I was able to get a shot off,” said Magner, who spun around and tucked a low 14-yarder inside the far post to Maine goalie Karyn McMullin’s right.
The ever-dangerous Enos was rewarded for her tenacity as she converted her ninth shot at goal in the match.
Amanda Lasowecky intercepted a Megan O’Hazo pass in the midfield and sent a pass up to Chag.
“I knew Dee [Enos] was to my right so I flicked it on to her,” said Chag.
Enos said, “It became a foot race between me and one of their defenders. I took one touch and shot it. I aimed for the far post, the far panel. Their goalie got a piece of it.”
Fotiu converted a Kate Maynard cross as she fought through a defender and pulled the ball around BU goalie Meghan Lynch.
Lynch made two saves on six first-half shots before Beth Weisman played the shotless second half.
McMullin stopped 11 of 36 shots and Atherley praised the play of fullbacks Nancy Dillingham and Mary Miller.
Maine’s Alex Henderson suffered a knee injury with five seconds left and was taken to a local hospital.
