VAN BUREN – Channel Wright scored a goal and added an assist as the No. 1 Van Buren Crusaders topped the No. 2 Machias Bulldogs 4-2 for the Eastern Maine Class D boys soccer title Saturday.
The win avenged Van Buren’s loss to Machias in last year’s EM final.
The 16-0-1 Crusaders will meet Western Maine champ Monmouth for the Class D state title next Saturday.
Wright headed the ball in off a cross from Stacy Ayotte and Wright assisted on a goal by Ayotte’s brother Eric Ayotte. Adam St. Pierre and Sadded unassisted goals and Sean Violette made five saves on 10 shots.
“They have a good goalie, so we knew we had to be aggressive and take a lot of shots,” Van Buren coach Steve LaPierre said. “We came up with some big goals and the kids all played well. They were excited for this. Our goal the whole year has been to get back here.”
Micah Hall recorded two goals for Machias, which finishes its season with a 14-3 record. Matt Cobb assisted on one of Hall’s goals and Kevin Loughlin stopped 16 of the 24 shots he faced.
Brunswick 3, Morse 0
At Brunswick, Kyle Vosmus netted two goals and added an assist to lead the No. 1 Dragons to the Eastern Maine Class A title.
Vosmus assisted on Nate Barnes’ goal. Ryan Deveaux and Eric Lemont had assists on Vosmus’ goals. Bryan Wallace stopped all 19 shots he faced for 17-0-1 Brunswick, which will face Western Maine champ Sanford in the state final.
Matt Snell made 27 saves on 30 shots for the No. 6 Shipbuilders of Bath, who finish their season at 11-4-2.
