BANGOR — A Bangor physician will be one of the lead investin a $3.5 million osteoporosis study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Dr. Clifford Rosen, director and founder of the Maine Center for Osteoporosis Research and Education, also co-wrote the grant application with Dr. Dennis Black, a University of California physician.

Bangor will be one of four sites for the research study, involving $600,000 of the grant. Some 50 Maine women will be recruited to take part in the research.

Rosen and St. Joseph Hospital opened the Maine Center for Osteoporosis Research and Education in 1992. Since then, Rosen, who is an internationally known expert in the field, has participated in many clinical trials and research projects.

A graduate of the University of Maine, he also is the founder and editor of the Journal of Clinical Densitometry.
