MAINE vs. UNIV. of LATVIA SELECT

Time, site: Thursday, 7 p.m. (exhibition); Alfond Arena, Orono

Records: Maine 0-0; Latvia 0-1

Key players: Maine – 6-4 C Jamie Cassidy (23.8 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 2.2 bpg), 5-7 G Amy Vachon (8.6 ppg, 4.2 rpg, 8.1 apg, 2.5 spg), 5-10 G Kristen McCormick (11.7 ppg, 3.1 rpg), 5-10 F Kizzy Lopez (5.3 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 2.4 spg), 6-1 F Anna James (1st season), 6-0 F Katie Clark (3.9 ppg); Latvia – 6-0 F Ieva Tare (22 ppg, 8 rpg, 5 apg, 3 spg), 5-10 F Svetlana Zitane (15 ppg, 5 spg), 5-10 C Ieva Ozolina (6 ppg, 6 rpg), 6-0 C Kristine Zeimute (3 ppg, 3 rpg), 6-0 F Inese Jansone (2 ppg)

Outlook: The Bears take on their first outside competition of the season in hopes of meshing for their Nov. 15 season opener against Boston College. Maine is without the services of starting forward Martina Tinklova, who had arthroscopic knee surgery Monday to repair a slight ligament tear. That means more playing time for James, Eva Moldre, and Christy Grover. The Latvians are a veteran club team whose players average 27 years old. The Selects are coming off Tuesday’s 80-50 loss at George Washington, during which they committed 29 turnovers and shot only 28 percent from the field.
