Tufts upsets top-seeded Bates

LEWISTON – Barbara Szajda knocked in her own rebound five minutes into the first overtime period as eight-seeded Tufts University shocked top-seeded Bates College 1-0 in their ECAC New England Division III field hockey tournament quarterfinal Thursday.

Tufts will now face No. 5 Williams at 2 p.m. on Saturday in one semifinal after Wesleyan, the No. 2 seed and the host for the tourney, takes on No. 6 Colby beginning at 11 a.m.

Szajda’s goal was her third of the year. It was unassisted.

Dena Sloan made six saves in posting her second shutout of the season for the 9-6 Jumbos.

Peggy Ficks stopped seven shots for Bates, which finished at 11-4. It was the most wins in a season by a Bobcat team since 1982.
