CASTINE – Steve Tardif ended his collegiate career Saturday afternoon by rushing for 288 yards and six touchdowns as the Maine Maritime Academy Mariners defeated Framingham State 46-27.

With more than eight minutes left in the game, Tardif was within 32 yards of breaking the NCAA Division III career rushing record of 6,125 yards, held by Carey Bender of Coe College. But Tardif opted to sit out the rest of the game and give his younger teammates a chance to carry the ball.

Earlier in the game, Tardif broke Joe Dudek’s 14-year-old career record by rushing for more than 100 yards in 31 games. Tardif’s six touchdowns broke Rob Marchitello’s school record.

Justin Brown’s 59-yard punt return accounted for the other Maine Maritime (3-6) touchdown.

Luke Callahan passed for 293 yards and four touchdowns for Framingham (2-8).

Dayne, of Wisconsin, broke the major-college career rushing record set just last year by Williams, of Texas.

Matt Smith passed for 239 yards as Colby amassed 408 yards of total offense to 233 yards for Bowdoin.
