POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Andy Bedard scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had six assists and six steals to lead the University of Maine to a 69-61 win over Delaware State Saturday night.
Bedard, a senior guard from Rumford, also won a spot on the All-Tournament Team with his performance in the consolation game of the Pepsi MAR
The Black Bears led by as many as 16 points in the first half, but the Hornets rallied to take a brief lead midway through the second period.
“It was like the BABC [preseason] exhibition where we didn’t play very well but did very good things in the last six or seven minutes to win the game,” UMaine coach John Giannini said.
Keying the run was the play of Bedard and sophomore shooting guard Huggy Dye, Giannini said. Dye scored 17 of his 20 points after intermission and also finished with three assists and three steals.
“Andy and Huggy together made some tremendous decisions down the stretch where they got us a good shot every time down the court down the stretch,” Giannini said.
Giannini said that Bedard bounced back from a subpar performance in Friday’s loss to Bucknell in style.
“I’m really pleased with Andy in a lot of ways. I think he’s been playing really well,” Giannini said. “He’s been making good decisions. He did not have one of his better games Friday night, but he responded in the perfect way on Saturday.”
Giannini also singled out the defensive play of freshman guard Derrick Jackson.
Julian Dunkley scored 15 points for the 1-1 Black Bears.
For Delaware State (0-2), Stefan Malliet scored 18 points and handed ouit five assists while Demond Wilkerson had 13 points.
