WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – The Maine Event field hockey Under-19 team finished as the national field hockey champions in their pool of eight teams on Saturday.
The tournament that brought together 3,000 athletes and 170 teams, was made up of 14 pools, resulting in 14 national championship teams.
The Maine team scored 22 goals in seven games and gave up only one goal to take the Pool M title. In all seven games, goalies Kristina Lanetake the Pool M title. In all seven games, goalies Kristina Lane of Belfast and Mt. View’s Ellen Ward split time to backstop the championship run.
On Saturday, the team started by defeating the Pennyslvania Tazmanian Turtles 3-0. Belfast’s Amanda Brown, Jay’s Jana Ouellette and Winslow’s Ashley Sennett scored goals. Ouellette also added an assist while Messalonskee’s Ashley Pullen had two.
The Maine Event went on to beat the Connecticut Nutmeg II 2-0 with goals from Sennett and Lisbon’s Karla Letourneau. Gardiner’s Jenny Dill added an assist.
The final game was a 5-1 Maine Event victory over the New Jersey New Heights. Skowhegan’s Phillis Ward, Dill, Pullen, Letourneau and Winslow’s Amie Dubois scored goals. Sennett, Ward, Jillian LeClair of Gardiner, and Emily Dooling of Winthrop each had assists.
The Maine Event under-16 team lost one and tied two games Saturday, falling to New Jersey’s New Heights 2-1, and tying Pennsylvania’s Sutter’s Brigade and Pennyslvania’s Riptides 2-2.
