Tufts Health Plan to lay off 270 workers

CONCORD, N.H. — Tufts Health Plan announced Wednesday it will lay off 270 workers — including 90 in Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island — so it can focus exclusively on the Massachusetts market.

Tufts said it also will eliminate 131 vacant positions and 30 more through attrition. It had earlier announced that it was pulling out of Maine.

The company said most of its members are in Massachusetts and the cutback will save $30 million next year.

Dr. Harris Berman, chief executive of Tufts Health Plan, said the layoffs will allow the company to focus on a better health plan in Massachusetts.

Tufts New England has lost $140 million since expanding in 1995, including about $27 million in Maine this year.

New Hampshire Insurance Commissioner Paula Rogers appointed someone to run the plan for the three states. The plan is under court supervision. The move came after Tufts Health Plan of Waltham, Mass., decided it would stop subsidizing its failing subsidiary.
