Towns in eastern Hancock County, from Dedham to Gouldsboro, have discussed the implications of the Y2K bug, but no formal contingency plans have been made. Most towns report that the fire departments will be on call, as always, in case any problems come as a result of the possible computer glitch.
Troopers from Hancock and Washington counties will be out in force on New Year’s Eve as a precautionary measure.
Lt. Herbert Morse of the Maine State Police said Tuesday that vacation and leave time for troopers in the region had been canceled, and that the full complement of troopers would be on duty from New Year’s Eve until about 4 a.m. the next morning. He emphasized that the extra patrols are the result of “preparing for the worst,” and didn’t mean that police are expecting major problems.
The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department plans to treat New Year’s Eve as any other end of the year celebration, Sheriff William Clark said last week. While extra deputies will be on call, Clark said the normal rotation of officers will be on duty Dec. 31.
