Police arrest man with shotgun

BAR HARBOR — Police arrested a shotgun-wielding Bar Harbor man late Tuesday after responding to a domestic complaint in which the man allegedly said he would “take matters into his own hands” and later waved the gun.

Responding to the complaint, Bar Harbor police Officer Allen Smith drew his gun and the man handed the 12-gauge pump action shotgun to Officer Marla Fugazzi.

Thomas Alley, 36, was arrested on a charge of terrorizing and summoned to appear in Bar Harbor District Court on additional charges of reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon and criminal threatening.

Alley had called the Bar Harbor police station just before midnight Tuesday to report that his wife, Sherri Alley, 36, had cut him.

Officers Fugazzi and Smith arrived at the lower Main Street home to learn that the couple had been arguing while their children were apparently upstairs sleeping. Thomas Alley, who was reportedly intoxicated during the argument, appeared to have a scratch on his neck, according to a police report.

Once the two officers arrived, the couple attempted to defuse the situation and Sherri Alley did not want to register a formal complaint with police, according to Police Chief Nathan Young.

Thomas Alley allegedly insisted that Sherri Alley leave the home and said he would not be the one to leave the house that night. If police tried to make him leave he would go get his shotgun, according to a police report.

Police suggested that Thomas Alley leave. They followed him into another room, where he took a shotgun out of a gun cabinet, according to the police report.

Thomas Alley then reportedly waved the gun and Smith drew his weapon. Alley then handed the shotgun to Fugazzi.

Police arrested Alley. He was released from the Hancock County Jail on $2,500 unsecured bail and under conditions that he not contact the family for 24 hours, not use alcohol or drugs and not possess any dangerous weapons.

Alley is scheduled to appear in Bar Harbor District Court on Feb. 2, 2000.
