St. George panel to mull Hurricane Island plan

ST. GEORGE — The planning board intends Jan. 11 to review an application it approved for Hurricane Island Outward Bound School to develop a 45-acre site on Wheeler Bay for its sea programs.

Several neighbors filed an appeal with the zoning board last month, claiming the project conflicts with the town’s ordinances. The residents also want to have conditions placed on the project if it is ultimately approved.

After considering the appeal last week, the zoning board sent the site-plan application and change-of-use request back to the planning board for clarification.

The planning board will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 11, at the town office.

The appellants’ lawyer, Samuel Cohen of Waldoboro, wrote that the planning board made findings without any supporting evidence.

The zoning board wants the planning board to provide a written review of the performance standards involved in its approval of the project.
