New interim leader takes over County school district

SHERMAN STATION — The SAD 25 board has hired Charles F. Pease of Kezer Falls as interim superintendent for the next six months.

Pease will replace outgoing interim Superintendent Richard Marx, who has served in that post since August, after the resignation of Superintendent Lyford Beverage, who lived in Newport.

Pease, 51, is no stranger to northern Maine. He has a farm in Weston and served as principal at East Grand School in Danforth from 1988 to 1990.

He has been coming to the southern Aroostook County area since the early 1970s to hunt with friends, including some who have worked in SAD 25, he said during a telephone interview on Thursday.

He also worked as an elementary school supervising principal for almost three years in Steuben, and as principal for three years at Shead High School in Eastport.

The interim school official is a 1970 graduate of the University of Southern Maine and also holds a master’s degree in administration from the university.

Pease said he took the SAD 25 post because “I wanted the challenge and had an opportunity to do something that wasn’t being a principal.

“When this came up, I talked with the people and liked what I heard,” he said.

Pease said it is a good time to come to the district, which serves Mount Chase, Patten, Sherman and Stacyville, because the district has moved into a period of stability.

He noted that years of efforts to consolidate the district and close four elementary schools were tumultuous in SAD 25. During that time, he said the district also had several superintendents.

With the consolidation issue resolved, Pease said, the six months as interim superintendent will be “a good chance to prove what I’ve got.”
