Web Y2K store to close early

DEXTER — Business is booming but Y2kmart is pulling the plug on sales of gas masks, portable generators and other emergency items, effective Friday night.

The Internet-based store will close until Monday because of concerns about computer viruses and hackers using confusion surrounding the new year to launch attacks on computers, said Lonnie Miller.

“We’re going to reopen Monday,” she said.

The announcement came as business reached a fever pitch with all 12 telephone lines swamped with incoming calls, Miller said.

Y2kmart is one of numerous businesses catering to last-minute survivalist shoppers, offering a range of Y2K survival kits.

The orders continued to come in strong on Thursday because people believe year 2000-related problems could continue after the new year, Miller said.

Mark Miclette, owner of Y2kmart, estimated that a third of the $2.5 million in anticipated sales this year would come in November and December.
