It’s tiresome to read the Bangor Daily News and see where the University of Maine is again asking for money. This time it wants $28.4 million.

Every year there’s always a big bond issue to vote on which is foolishly passed, saddling our chileren, grandchilren and ourselves with another debt to pay off. Then there’s the governor buying up land for future preservation. It will be interesting to see if, who or what will be restricted on that land 30 years from now.

Don’t you think it’s time for UMaine to back off and quit asking for money or bonds? It should spend time weeding out the waste in its system.

It’s time for the Legislature to vote in some research funding for diseases, of which diabetes is one of many that is underfunded. The federal government spends $40 billion a year treating diabetics yet only 1 percent of this money is used for research. With more money it could find a cure and free up a lot of that $40 billion and use it for tax breaks, Social Security and education.

The Legislature should push for increased research funding. Many diabetics would be happy. I’m sure there are diabetics sitting in the House or Senate who would be happy, too. Jean Hamilton Veazie
