One of the constants of the Bangor Daily News is that if Wayne Reilly writes a story, it will be well-written, insightful and enjoyable. The look back at 1900 (Jan. 8-9) did not disappoint me.

I have moved to the Richmond, Va., area from Hampden and enjoy keeping up with the Bangor area news via the Internet. Since moving here, I have learned more about the Civil War and the Confederacy than I ever thought I would. Hence, the section about the Confederate general John Gordon’s speech in Bangor during 1900 was of particular interest.

Thanks for another excellent article. Jo Ann Jellison Richmond, Va.

It was a treat to see Wayne Reilly’s byline. His well-crafted and carefully researched perspective on 1900 was a pleasure to read. It entertained and informed in a thoughtful way without causing this reader’s midlife brain to seize up from factoid overload. My advice: Make him write more articles. Ardeana Hamlin Hampden
