During the summer of 1999, the Volunteer Firefighters Association of Glenburn saw the need to purchase a high-tech piece of lifesaving equipment and began the formidable task of raising $21,500 for a Thermal Imaging Camera for the department and the town. It will be their eyes in the hostile and smoked-filled environment that comes with a fire.

The association’s volunteer efforts on our behalf have consumed hundreds of hours of their time to raise money doing everything from having street dances in town to public suppers and auctions. They’ve also received numerous donations from local and area citizens and businesses, a local community club, the Wal-Mart Corp. and most impressively, a $2,000 donation from the children of the Pine Hill Nursery School in Glenburn who raised the money through sponsorships in a “Learn not to Burn” program where they are taught to drop and roll if they are in a fire.

While the end of the firefighters’ quest is in sight, they still lack about $6,600 in order to purchase the camera. Tonight at 7 p.m. a special town meeting will be held at the Glenburn Municipal Building for the purpose of appropriating the additional funds needed from the town’s surplus account. Winter is upon us and along with it, the heating season with it’s added risk of fire. Please join with me at the town meeting and help to bring closure to the firefighter’s efforts on our behalf. Bob Campbell Glenburn
