John Martin’s idea of a year-round ranger camp at Churchill Dam on the Allagash Wilderness Waterway is one more nail in the coffin of the wilderness.
Let’s tear down the ranger camp at Churchill Dam, Nugent’s Sporting Camps on Chamberlain Lake, Jalbert’s Sporting Camps on Round Pond and all the other buildings which exist on the waterway. Let’s bring the wilderness back to the AWW. Let’s challenge ourselves to manage the waterway with no buildings and with only a minimum number of roads and access points.
Future generations will applaud such actions. Remember — once the wilderness is gone, it is gone forever. Paul Shanley Eddington
