BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I was appalled by your Feb. 5-6 article, “Houlton gets $100,000 day care project grant.” I cannot believe town officers aided in the request for $151,000 to provide a day care facility that caters to students who have infant children. It sounded like Southern Aroostook Vocational Education Director Paul Crandall was proud of the fact that Houlton has the highest teen pregnancy rate in Aroostook County. How absurd.

If a quarter of that money was spent on educating teens on abstinence, safe sex and pregnancy prevention, we would not need such a facility. This is like giving them the go-ahead to be carefree and irresponsible and not have to worry about it because if a pregnancy and child result from it, it will be taken care of — at someone else’s expense.

Where are the parents of these teens who are so greatly populating our town and what should their financial responsibility for their children be? This is the biggest waste of money I’ve seen in a long time. Julie Tribou Houlton
