Baldacci, Allen announce winning high school artists

PORTLAND — Maine’s selections for “An Artistic Discovery: A Congressional Art Competition” were announced during a ceremony at the Maine College of Art in Portland on Saturday by U.S. Reps. John Baldacci and Tom Allen.

Two pieces of artwork — one from each of Maine’s congressional districts — were selected. They will hang in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year, along with selections from other participating congressional districts.

The 2000 winner from the 1st Congressional District is Ed Donahue, a sophomore at South Portland High School. His painting will be on display with a collage created by the winner from the 2nd Congressional District — Victor Schrader, a junior at Rangeley Lakes Regional High School.

“This unique art competition … is an exciting chance for the young people of Maine to be recognized for their artistic abilities,” Baldacci and Allen said in a joint statement. “We want to thank everyone who submitted works of art, and we congratulate Ed and Victor for their outstanding entries. It will be an honor to point out their artwork to other members of Congress and to constituents touring the Capitol.”
