BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

It’s deregulation

Much has been said about the potential savings of restructuring electricity. My January bill from Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. brings it all into focus. Electricity supply was $24.72 and delivery service was $74.85, for a total of $99.87.

Since the delivery service is “regulated,” there will be no competition to lower this part of the bill ($74.85).

The amount of electricity supply ($24.72) is the part of the bill that could be lower through competition by 5 to 9 percent, we have been told.

For the sake of simplicity, let’s assume I get lucky and could reduce the supply amount by 9 percent. Nine percent of $24.72 is $2.23. Therefore, my bill of approximately $100 could be reduced to about $98 or about 2 percent. Now I understand de-regulation. Philip Watts Roque Bluffs
