Williams ousts Colby

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Williams College Ephmen used two power-play goals and one shorthand goal on its way to a 6-1 men’s hockey victory overone shorthand goal on its way to a 6-1 men’s hockey victory over the Colby College White Mules Friday in an NESCAC semifinal.

Williams’ goals were scored by Chad Obiga, Joe Butler, Eric Demment, Bobby Moss, Dan Cotuno, and Stephen Owen. Butler, Tim Albrecht and Ogiba tallied two assists each while David Carrillo, Bill Gilchrist, Andrew Beasley recorded one. David Haimson stopped 33 shots for 17-6-3 Williams.

Sean O’Grady tallied Colby’s lone goal, assisted by James LaLiberty and Chris Tashjian. Jesse Kucenic made 25 saves for 16-9-1 Colby.

Men’s basketball

CenConn 63, UMBC 55

TRENTON, N.J. Rick Mickens scored 19 points and John Tice added 15 and sparked a key run to start the second half as Central Connecticut defeated UMBC, 63-55, in a Northeast Conference Tournament quarterfinal game Friday night.

Top-seeded Central Connecticut (23-5, 16-3) meets St. Francis in Saturday’s semifinal. Eighth-seeded UMBC finishes 11-18 and 8-11 in NEC play.

The Blue Devils opened their biggest lead of the first half at 28-19 before UMBC used a 4-0 run to cut it to 28-23 at halftime. Central Connecticut opened the second half with six straight points and an 11-2 run for a 39-27 lead.

Central Connecticut took its biggest lead at 52-34, and UMBC never got closer than the final score. Terence Ward led UMBC with 18 points and Kennedy Okafor added 15.

Victor Payne had 14 points, 13 rebounds and four assists for Central Connecticut. Mickens, the NEC Player of the Year, shot 5-for-22.

Women’s basketball

Tennessee 91, Florida 79

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn.- Freshman April McDivitt scored 11 of her career-high 19 points over a four-minute stretch of the second half Friday in helping No. 2 Tennessee hold off Florida 91-79 in the SEC women’s tournament quarterfinals.

Tennessee (26-3) trailed 50-49 with 16:52 left when McDivitt took over against the seventh-seeded Lady Gators (17-12).

Her jumper put Tennessee ahead to stay at 51-50 with 15:55 left in sparking a 12-2 run.

Seconds later, she stole the ball, ran down for a layup and hit the free throw for a three-point play. She capped the spurt with two 3s, the last from the top of the key for a 64-54 lead at the 12:04 mark.

Tamika Catchings led the Lady Vols with 23 points, Michelle Snow had 19, and Semeka Randall 15.
