BRONX, N.Y. – Quin Peel was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and two out in the top of the ninth inning Monday, lifting the University of Maine to a 7-6 college baseball victory over Fordham at Jack Coffey Field.
The Black Bears improved to 2-11, snapping a five-game losing streak. Senior Jared Cochran pitched two innings of hitless relief to get the win.
Jon Hambelton sparked the UMaine offense with a double and a single good for three RBIs.
The Bears scored twice in the ninth without benefit of a hit. Reliever Ryan Crist came on and walked Mike Livulpi, then struck out Julian Bracali. After Livulpi stole second, Brett Ouellette fouled out to third base.
Mike Ross, Joe Drapeau, and Hambelton walked, forcing in the first run and setting up the plunking of Peel.
Rusty Tucker went seven innings for UMaine, allowing seven hits and walking seven.
The Bears scored two in the first inning after two were out. Ross singled to center and Drapeau doubled down the line in left to put runners at second and third. Hambelton followed with a two-run double to left-center.
UMaine made it 5-0 in the second when Keith Genest walked, moved up on Bob Harris’ sacrifice bunt and took third on a passed ball. Livulpi walked, then Bracali delivered an RBI single.
One out later, after a double steal, two runs scored when Justin Walker dropped Ross’ fly ball to left.
The Rams chipped away, taking a 6-5 lead with two runs in the seventh. Tucker walked Nick Sun and James Cisco with one out, then surrendered a two-out, two-run double to left by Dan Colonna.

Colby wins two
At Fort Myers, Fla., Colby College of Waterville swept a doubleheader from Central College of Iowa, winning 6-3 and 15-11.
In the first game, Jay Johnson had two singles and two RBIs knocking in the winning run in the sixth inning.
Matt Menninga hit a two-run triple for Central.
In the second game, Colby scored six runs on six hits in the sixth inning.
Matt Simard tallied three singles and two RBIs, while Andy Tripp and Kevin Brunell hit two singlesand had two RBIs each for Colby.
Central’s Matt Ruby tripled, doubled and singled.

Softball UMaine wins twice in Florida
At Osceola, Fla., Sara Jewett and Karyn McMullin combined for nine hits and five RBIs as the University of Maine softball team posted victories over Youngstown State (Ohio) and Maryland-Baltimore County.
The Black Bears downed the Penguins 7-1, then beat the Retrievers 4-1.
In the first game, UMaine erupted for five runs in the fifth inning to break it open. Jewett hit a home run and two singles with two RBIs to pace the Bears.
Ashley Yuhas socked home run and had three RBIs, while McMullin added a home run, a single and two RBIs. Erica Sobel hit a solo homer to back Yuhas, who scattered eight hits to get the win.
Mistine Hamilton and Sara Fleet each singled twice for Youngstown.
In the second contest, McMullin plated two runs with a double and a single to lead UMaine to victory. Jewett rapped a tripled and a single, while Katie Hedges doubled.
Carrie Green (4-2) allowed four hits in six innings to earn the victory.
Crystal Ray had an RBI single for UMBC.

Colby drops two
At Fort Myers, Fla., Endicott (Mass.) College and North Central (Ill.) College both earned victories over Colby of Waterville. Endicott beat Colby 5-2 and North Central won 11-3.
In the first game, Kelly Martin hit a two-run single for Colby. Marcie Wagner, Kate Dalton, Caroline Koskinas and Kate Magmuson each singled for Colby in the second game.
