STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Mike Ross belted a solo home run to lead off the 10th inning Thursday, lifting the University of Maine to a 10-9 baseball victory over Wagner College at Willetts Field.

Ross’ blast capped a four-homer day for the Black Bears, who hit a home run in each of the four innings they scored a run. It was UMaine’s second win in a row.

Ross also stroked a triple and a single for the Bears, while Jon Hambelton smacked a two-run homer in the first inning to go with a triple and a single. Julian Bracali hit a three-run shot in UMaine’s four-run third inning and added two singles.

Joe Drapeau of Biddeford rapped a solo homer in the fifth as the Bears tied the game at 9-9 and had a sacrifice fly. Freshman Aaron Young of Augusta singled twice to back relief winner Jared Cochran of Norridgewock.

Cochran (3-0), scattered three hits over the final three innings to get the win after Adam Labelle held the hosts to three runs in six innings of relief.

Mike Cerminaro paced the Seahawks with a double and four singles (1 RBI), while Chris Dick added a two-run home run, a double and a single.

UMaine scored twice in the first, but spotted Wagner a four-run advantage as the hosts scored six runs off starter Eric Johnson in the bottom of the inning.

At Babson Park, Fla., Thomas College took the lead in the third inning but a six-run fourth inning for Webber College turned the game around.

Chad Boyd paced Thomas with a double, two RBIs and a run scored; while Scott Sibley added two singles and two RBIs.

Ryan Merkle had a homer, a single, an RBI and two runs scored for Webber College.

USM splits

At Ft. Myers, Fla., junior outfielder Shaun Richardson paced a 25-hit attack with four hits to the give University of Southern Maine its first win of the season after it fell to Allegheny, 5-4.

In the first game, Allegheny took advantage of four USM errors in the third to score three runs and tie the game. Allegheny pushed the decisive run across in the fifth inning on senior Brad Hensler’s bases loaded single.

Senior right-hander Jeff Mountain went the distance for Allegheny allowing eight hits, two walks, one earned run and striking out two.

Senior Denny Webber of Sabattus took the loss for USM despite allowing just one earned run.

In the second game, USM squandered a 9-1 lead when Allegheny scored a pair of runs in the third and nine more in the fifth to make it 12-9. The Huskies tied the game in the sixth on an RBI double by Richardson, who tied a school record with three doubles, and a two-run single by freshman Andy Lang, who also had four hits and four RBI.

The Huskies scored four in the eighth as Toomey snapped the 12-12 tie with a two-out, RBI single. After Toomey stole second, Jody Curcuru plated a pair of runs with a single and then scored on Tyler Delorme’s single.
