Paul Grosswiler’s political attack on MBNA (BDN, March 24) and its financial support for the University of Maine actually undermined the point he tried to make. By criticizing and encouraging suspicion about MBNA’s generosity to the university and to countless other community and charitable causes, in effect he argues that corporations should ignore the needs of its workers and community. Is that in the public’s best interest?

It’s very easy to criticize businesses for not doing enough for others. As the Bangor Daily News itself pointed out just a few days earlier, MBNA is a shining example of a business that understands its responsibilites to all. As one who appeciates MBNA’s involvement with the University of Maine, count me among the many people in our state who wants to see more businesses follow MBNA’s lead and get more actively involved in the community.
