NEWARK, Del. – The University of Maine baseball team pounded out 16 hits in Sunday’s second game as the Black Bears notched a 15-11 victory over Delaware after dropping three straight to the Blue Hens in Maine’s America East season-opening baseball series.

Delaware won Sunday’s opener 5-2. On Saturday, the Hens won the first game 2-1 and rolled 18-9 in the second game.

In Sunday’s nightcap, Jon Hambelton belted two homers and two singles and drove in six runs in the Maine win. Jamie Barrett hit a home run and two singles and Joe Drapeau singled three times and tallied three RBIs.

Jim Bailin allowed eight hits in 4 1/3 innings for the win.

Delaware’s Reid Gorecki hit two home runs and Chris Kolodzey knocked in four runs.

In Sunday’s opener, Kolodzey hit a three-run homer in the third inning and Peter Maestrales followed with a solo shot off Bears lefthander Rusty Tucker to power Delaware.

Maine’s Mike Ross notched a solo home run in the fourth inning. Freshman Aaron Young of Augusta singled twice.

In Saturday’s first game, Delaware’s Rich McGuire pitched a three-hitter, allowing one run and striking out 11. Delaware’s John Schneider hit a solo homer and Peter Maestrales drove in the winning run in the bottom of the seventh with a bases-loaded single.

Barrett hit two doubles for Maine and Julian Bracali grounded out in the fifth inning to drive in Drapeau for the Bears’ only run.

In Saturday’s second game, Delaware scored six runs in the first inning and 12 in the third to pull away for the win. Vince Vukovich led the Hens with a double, two singles and three RBIs.

Hambelton paced Maine with three singles, while Drapeau, Barrett and Bracali each singled twice.

Huskies split doubleheader

At Providence, Andy Lang hit a three-run homer to start a four-run rally in the eighth as the USM Huskies came from behind to beat Rhode Island College 10-8 in the first game.

In the second game, Dave Walsh hit a three-run homer to snap the 4-4 tie in the seventh for Southern Maine, before the Anchormen came back to take the game 7-4.

Husson splits with St. Joseph’s

At Standish, Husson of Bangor and St. Joseph’s split a doubleheader 6-3 and 14-1 on Saturday.

In the first game, Aaron Largay went 4-for-4, hitting two doubles and driving in two for Husson. John Montgomery added a home run.

Jesse Lacasse hit a homer for St. Joe’s, while Nick Mirabello added two singles.

In the second game, Joe Holland homered for St. Joe’s, while Lacasse went 3-for-3, hitting a triple, double and single.

Largay doubled, while Chris Morris singled for Husson.

Bowdoin sweeps UM-Farmington

At Brunswick, John Perry picked up the victory in the first game, 4-3, while Jamie Russo earned the second 12-11.

In the first game, Seth Paradis hit a single for Bowdoin. Four more singles plated two more runs for the edge. Nick Potts and Jeff Bird hit RBI singles to post UMF’s first runs.

In the second game, UM-Farmington scored six runs in two innings when Greg Lovely sparked a three-run inning for the Polar Bears.

Husson sweeps Bowdoin

At Brunswick, Dave Dostie fired a two-hitter in the opener and Keith Simmons pitched a three-hitter in the second game Sunday as Husson College of Bangor swept a doubleheader from Bowdoin.

The Braves won the first game 6-2 and took the nightcap 3-2.

Dostie (5-2) struck out six of the last nine batters he faced while leading Husson to victory. He finished with a two-hitter, striking out 11.

Mike Worcester had three hits for the winners, including a two-run single in the seventh. Chris Pickering provided an RBI single in the sixth as Husson broke a 2-2 tie.

In the second game, Simmons (2-2) scattered three hits while going the distance. The Braves scored the eventual game-winner in the fifth when Mike King drew a one-out walk, took third on Jared Foster’s single and scored on an Aaron Largay sacrifice fly.

Bowdoin’s Seth Kolodziejski pitched a four-hitter.

UM-Presque Isle, Bates split

At Lewiston, Tony Garreans rapped a three-run triple to spark a four-run fourth inning as the Owls won the second game and salvaged a split of Sunday’s twinbill against the Bobcats.

Bates won the opener 3-2 and UMaine-Presque Isle took the second game 9-6.

In the nightcap, UMPI broke a 3-3 tie in the fourth when an error and two walks set the stage for Garreans’ triple. He eventually scored and the Owls added two insurance runs in the seventh.

In the first game, James Hanley and Shane Delaney combined on a four-hitter for the Bobcats. Matt Pound’s two-run double in the sixth provided the margin of victory.

Colby sweeps doubleheader

At Waltham, Mass., Colby junior Steph Greenleaf held Brandeis to one run in the opener in a sweep of Brandeis, recording a 6-1 win in the opener and a 13-9 victory in the nightcap.

In the first game, Colby’s Stacy Thurston gave up seven runs in 5 1/3 innings, while two players had two hits each.

In the second game, five different Mules scored two runs each. Marcy Wagner led the way with a solo homer in the fifth and a two-run shot in the sixth.

Maine wins three of four

At West Hartford, Conn., Carrie Green and Ashley Yuhas each picked up a win on Saturday as UMaine swept Hartford 4-0 and 2-1. The Bears split with Hartford on Sunday, winning 2-0 and losing 4-1.

In Saturday’s first game, Green pitched 6 1/3 innings of five-hit ball, walking none and striking out three in the shutout. Sophomore Erica Sobel fueled the Bears’ nine-hit attack with two singles, a double, an RBI and a run scored.

Jodiann Palmeirei paced Hartford with two singles.

In Saturday’s second game, Yuhas improved to 6-5 in the circle, pitching six innings of five-hit ball while giving up one earned run, two walks and striking out three. Sobel again paced the Bears with a double and a run scored.

On Sunday, Green, who improved to 8-4, held Hartford to just two hits.

The Bears were held scoreless for six innings by Liz Nadeau, but back-to-back singles from Sobel and Sara Jewett were followed by a two-run double to right by Karyn McMullin in the seventh to lift UMaine to the 2-0 win.

In the second game, Andi Miller took a no-hitter into the seventh inning as Hartford defeated UMaine, 4-1, and prevented the sweep.

Jenn Vuolo, who homered, scored on a ground ball by Kelly Belmont in the third, and the Hawks added a run in the fifth off an RBI double by junior Marci Simoneau to pull away.

McMullin roped an RBI single that scored Sobel, who singled and advanced on a wild pitch, to ruin Miller’s shutout bid.

Bowdoin sweeps Bates

At Brunswick, Katie Sheridan hit a two-run double in the 10th inning of the first game to give the Polar Bears the 6-5 win. Kristie Miller knocked in six runs for an 8-5 win to complete the sweep.

In the first game, Erin McDonough hit a two-run, two-out double while Gina Laugelli allowed one unearned run in the first six innings for Bowdoin. Teresa Janisch and Laura Lent added RBI singles for Bates.

In the second game, Miller hit a grand slam in a five-run first and then talled a two-RBI single for Bowdoin, while Jessie Poulin scattered five runs and 10 hits over seven innings. Janisch led Bates with three hits and two RBI.

At Providence, Colby held off Rhode Island College 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Anchorwomen took game two 1-0.

In the first game, Kim Chadwick and Marcy Wagner each doubled for Colby, while Chadwick and Kate Dalton added an RBI apiece. Jen Cook tallied a double for RIC while Jen Siciliano and Meaghan Davis each drove in a run.

In the second game, Jen Savatelli drove in Margeaux Lanoie for Rhode Island College’s lone run.

At Dartmouth, Mass., Jim Ruggeri paced the Corsairs with five goals and one assist in the victory for UMass-Dartmouth on Sunday.

Tom Zysk led Maine Maritime with four goals. Obie Spear scored two for the Mariners and Ray Halsted chipped in a goal. Goalie Grant Robinson saved 15 of 43 shots for the 1-7 Mariners.
