Laugelli leads Polar Bears; Mariners sweep

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin pitcher Gina Laugelli allowed one earned run in seven innings while striking out six as the Polar Bears posted an 8-4 college softball win over Colby on Wednesday.

Katie Sheridan had three hits for the Polar Bears while Jessie Mayol gave Bowdoin the lead with a two-run single in the third inning.

Kim Chadwick scored a run in the first inning for Colby and Marcy Wagner scored two for the White Mules.

MMA takes two

At Castine, Alaina Hanlon hit a sacrifice fly to deep center in the bottom of the seventh inning to score Kristi Cooper and help the Mariners earn an 8-7 victory over UM-Augusta in the first game of a doubleheader. The Mariners won the second game 12-9.

In the first game, Cooper, Vicki Jones and Janice Spear each singled in Maine Maritime’s six-run seventh. Cooper finished with two singles and Spear had three singles and a sacrifice fly for an RBI in the sixth inning. For UM-Augusta, Bobbi Jo Wheeler singled twice and drove in a run, while Fawn Luczkowski doubled and singled for one RBI.

In the second game, the Mariners outhit the Moose 14-9. Stacey Ryan and Cooper each hit a double and a single and knocked in two runs. Caitlin Carr singled twice for two RBIs. UMA’s Wheeler recorded a two-run inside-the-park homer and Jessica Demers smacked a two-run triple.
