ORONO – The University of Maine softball team celebrated the opening of a new field this weekend, but Boston University made the Bears unwelcome in their own home.
Boston University took three-of-four games from Maine in a weekend series at Kessock Field, including a sweep on Saturday, with scores of 4-2 and 7-4. The Black Bears salvaged a split on Sunday, picking up a 1-0 win before falling 4-0 in the second game.
In Saturday’s first game, Robyn King finished with 12 strike outs and hit a home run for the Terriers. Sara Jewett became the first Black Bear to collect a hit at the new park, when she hit a two-run homer to center field in the fourth inning.
In the second game, Amy Parker led the ofensive charge going 4-for-4 with two doubles, three RBI and one run scored for the Terriers. Karyn McMullin and Amanda Stevens each had a double for Maine, while Jewett had a single.
In Sunday’s first game, Carrie Green allowed only three hits in seven innings for Maine, while Aliesha Rautenberg hit a double to pace the offense.
BU’s Mary Colleran allowed only two hits over six innings.
In game two, King struck out 12 again while giving up only three hits to lift BU. King also hit a two-run home run for Boston University. Ashley Yuhas gave up seven hits and four runs to BU, while Karyn McMullin hit a double for the Black Bears.

Bates sweeps UM-Presque Isle
At Lewiston on Saturday, Bates piled up 24 runs on as many hits while sweeping UMaine-Presque Isle by identical 12-4 scores.
In the opener, Ginger Walsh and Jen Tjepkema combined on a three-hitter and was backed by a double and a single by Laura Lent. Teresa Janish and Krissie Whiting singled twice each.
Kristin Supa homered for the Owls.
In the second game, Jen Crawford scattered three hits for Bates. Whiting stroked three singles and Janisch had two.
Steph Gagnon took the loss for UMPI.

UMF sweeps UM-Augusta
At Farmington, the Beavers capitalized on two high-scoring innings to sweep the University of Maine at Augusta. Farmington won the first game 9-1 and the second game 6-1.
In the first game, the Beavers came up with five runs in the sixth inning to down the Moose. Becky Roak had a home run and a single to pace the offense.
In the second game, UM-Farmington did all its damage in the first inning by scoring six runs. The Beavers registered five hits and two walks to score their runs.

Becker sweeps MMA
At Leicester, Mass., Aimee Levesque fired a pair of complete games as Becker College swept Maine Maritime Academy. The Hawks won by scores of 9-0 and 10-1.
In the first game, Levesque spun a no-hitter to lead the Hawks. Becker pounded the Mariners for 10 hits.
In the second game, Levesque tossed a two-hitter as Becker completed the sweep. Jamie Lewis had three singles and two RBIs for the winners. Shawna Scnitzke added a pair of singles.
Stacie Ryan and Caitlin Carr had one single apiece for the Mariners.

St. Joe’s wins two on Sunday
At Standish, the Monks pounded out 26 hits and scored 20 runs, taking wins over Johnson State and Castleton State on Sunday.
In the first game, Sarah Webster pitched a three-hitter and knocked in five runs to pace the Monks to a 9-1 win over Johnson State. Sue Picard doubled and singled to drive in a pair of runs.
April Cunniff singled to knock in a run for Johnson State.
In the second game, Becca Neault went 4-for-4 with a double and scored three runs in an 11-2 win over Castleton State. Janice DiNobile and Missy Foster had three hits apiece for the Monks. Four other players had two hits apiece.
Jayme Reed singled twice and scored a run for Castleton State. Leslie Swanson drove in two runs.

UM-Farmington wins two
At Windham, Vt., UM-Farmington won two games Sunday beating Johnson State 15-4 and Castleton 5-2.
In game one, UM-Farmington tallied 11 runs in the second to take Johnson State in five innings. Rachel Smallidge led the Beavers with three hits.
In game two, Melissa Leman pitched a three-hitter in the win.

At Dartmouth, Mass., Julie Plant had five hits and drove in five runs as the Huskies swept a doubleheader 6-1 and 9-0.
In game one, Becky Manson had a pair of hits and Stacy Dube had two RBI for USM. Bridget Donahue and Allison Collins each had three singles for UMass Dartmouth.
In game two, Plant had a two-run triple while Sarah McLean went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, a pair of triples, and a pair of RBI for Southern Maine.

Middlebury sweeps Colby
At Middlebury, Vt., Tyler Conrad struck out nine in the first game for the complete game win en route to two victories, 5-1 and 6-1.
In game one, Devon O’Neil hit a two-run homer in the first. O’Neil and Jon Cormier tallied two hits apiece for Middlebury. Jon Moro and Jonathan Lord led Colby with two hits apiece.
In game two, John Dickie and Brian Hamm each had a pair of hits to lead Middlebury. Andrew Tripp was 2-for-2 for the White Mules.

Huskies, Corsairs split
At Dartmouth, Mass., Pat Toomey broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI double and later scored the winning run in the seventh to give the USM Huskies the win of the first game 4-3. UMass-Dartmouth won the second 3-1.
In game one, Toomey, Jody Curcuru and Tyler Delorme each tallied RBI for Southern Maine. Eric Taylor, Jason Orlando and Jeff Davenport hit doubles for Dartmouth, while Mike Rahme added a homerun and tallied three RBI.
In game two, Taylor hit an RBI double and Orlando had two RBI. Delorme scored Southern Maine’s only run.

Husson takes 4 from UMPI
At Husson, Aaron Largay, Chris Pickering and Chris Morris drove in two runs each as the Braves thumped the Owls 11-3 Sunday afternoon to close out a four-game sweep.
Noel Santiago had an RBI and a stolen base for UMPI.
The Braves began the day with a 13-0 win over the Owls. Largay and Mike Worcester had three RBI each and Keith Simmons chipped in with a two-run double in the game while John Montgomery allowed just three hits and struck out eight in the game.
Largay also led the Braves in game one of the series on Saturday with a double and two RBI in Husson’s 9-4 win over the Owls.
The Braves’ Jeremy Nelson improved his record to 4-0 with the win.
In Saturday’s second game, Largay and Derik Prescott drove in two runs each and Keith Simmons held UMPI to just two hits as the Braves romped 11-0.
Ryan Romena and Nole Santiago had the Owls’ hits.

At Brunswick, Chris Davidson stole a pair of bases in the second to give him 20 on the season to break the single-season school record, but Colby took the game 6-5.
Jonathon Lord tallied three RBI singles for Colby. Pat Conly, 2-0, picked up the victory Sunday.
Greg Lovely tallied four hits for Bowdoin, while Joe Nicastro added a hit. Jamie Suzor recorded a single.

UM-Farmington sweeps Lyndon
At Lyndonville, Vt., Pat Conway pitched a three-hitter in the opener and Mark Badger fashioned a two-hit shutout in the second game Sunday as UMaine-Farmington swept Lyndon State 5-3 and 8-0.
In the first game, Mike Fullerton’s two-run single plated the tying and eventual winning runs in the Beavers’ three-run fifth inning. Fullerton, Daren Meader and Marc O’Clair had two hits apiece for UMF.
Lee Clough had two hits for the hosts.
In the second game, Lyndon couldn’t solve Badger. Meader tripled and singled for the Beavers, while O’Clair and Nick Ayotte had two singles each.

Tufts 11, Colby 10
At Waterville, Katie Richardson scored three goals in the first half as the Jumbos held off a late rally.
Liz Holtzman scored two goals and added two assists for Tufts, now 5-3. Ari Kristan made eight saves.
Angela Pappas netted three goals for the Mules, who dropped to 5-3. Mary Zito and and Anna Schierberl Scherr combined to make 12 saves.
Men’s lacrosse
Maine Maritime 19, Salem State 4
At Salem, Mass., junior Tom Zysk paced the Mariners with five goals and two assists in the victory Saturday.
MMA also received four goals from Obi Spear and two from Derek Wilding. Eric Gould, Doug Frongillo, Bryan Bacewicz, David Buehne, John Macisso, Keith Turcotte, Brad McDermott and Ray Halsted added a goal each. Spear added a pair of assists while goalie Grant Robinson made 15 saves for the (2-7) Mariners.
Salem scored a pair of goals from Keith Santos. Tim Finn stopped 17 for (3-8) Salem State.
Tufts 7, Colby 6
At Waterville, Jack Palmer scored the overtime goal in sudden-death to earn the victory for Tufts over Colby.
Ryan Kane and Ian Nurse scored two each for Colby. Jeff Boyer tallied one assist.
