Department employee’s son drives away county vehicle

ROCKLAND — A Knox County Sheriff’s Department employee and the employee’s son will meet with the sheriff this week to discuss the minor’s unauthorized use of an unmarked sheriff’s vehicle, a department spokesman said Wednesday.

Chief Deputy Todd Butler said an employee’s child, who did not have a driver’s license, took a county-owned unmarked vehicle April 14. Butler said it was parked outside the employee’s home about 9 p.m.

The department did not identify the employee or the child.

The juvenile drove the vehicle to a convenience store about a mile from the home, Butler said.

Sgt. Lawrence Hesseltine noticed the county vehicle at the store and “secured the vehicle in an appropriate manner,” according to a news release from the Sheriff’s Department on Wednesday.

Butler said the child had taken the vehicle without the parents’ knowledge.

The youngster was detained by Hesseltine but later released to the parent.
