Second woman dies after car accident> Quebec collision also leaves 2 injured

MADAWASKA — A Madawaska woman died Monday night at a Quebec City hospital of injuries suffered April 17 in a motor vehicle accident on the Trans-Canada Highway.

Simone Roussel, 70, died at the L’Enfant Jesus Hospital, Cpl. Michel Thibodeau of the Quebec Provincial Police said Wednesday.

She is the second woman to die as a result of the accident. Her sister Rolande Roussel, 73, also of Madawaska, died at the scene of the accident at Notre Dame du Lac, Quebec.

A third sister, Lucille Boucher, 65, of Madawaska, also was seriously injured in the accident. She was released from the Quebec City hospital last week and is recuperating at home.

The driver of the car that collided with a tractor-trailer truck on the highway, Leonette St. Onge, 45, of Madawaska, also suffered injuries and was released from a hospital the day after the accident.

All four women were trapped in the 1998 Buick LeSabre sedan, which was owned by the Roussel sisters. They had to be removed with the use of hydraulic extrication equipment.

The vehicle was struck by the westbound, loaded truck and ended up on its top after rolling over.

St. Onge was headed west on Route 185 and was attempting to change direction, to head east, toward the New Brunswick border and Maine, according to Thibodeau. While trying to change direction, she turned into the path of the oncoming truck, which was in the passing lane of a four-lane divided highway.

The operator of the truck was not injured in the accident.
