I was dismayed by the May 8 article regarding the possible elimination of the honor role in Cape Elizabeth. It seems that achieving the honor role is daunting to some students and causes others to cheat.
If the honor role is eliminated, there are two types of losers. The first are the students for whom exellence will no longer be rewarded. The second type of loser is even worse: the students who cheat would have one reason for cheating removed instead of using the opportunity to teach essential lessons in honesty and integrity.
What good can come from taking away a high goal and avoiding an opportunity to stand up for honesty? Society depends upon trust and honesty and there is no sense in removing chances to demonstrate those qualities. Jane LeBrun Chester
