Crews filming in Rockland, other towns

ROCKLAND — Crews for the independent film “In the Bedroom” will be in several coastal towns over the next few weeks.

The dramatic film, based on a short story by Andre Dubus about a fishing family, is set in Maine. The film stars Academy Award-winning actress Sissy Spacek as the mother and Nick Stahl as her son.

Stahl was in Maine in the early 1990s filming Mel Gibson’s “Man Without a Face.”

The film is a joint production of Good Machine International and Green Street Films, both of New York. A company formed in Maine for the film is called Eastern Standard Film Co.

The company is filming exterior shots without actors this week, location scout Kate Smith said Wednesday.

On Monday night part of Rockland’s Main Street was blocked off for shooting. On Tuesday night, the company was in Owls Head; Wednesday night, in Wiscasset; and later this week, Old Orchard Beach.

Smith said the locations were chosen for “driving shots” that will be used as backgrounds.

Actors arrive May 31, and the filming should be completed by July 6.

Some of the more high-profile filming will be done at Camden Library’s amphitheater, which is planned for June 8 or 9, depending on weather. Traffic will be blocked off on Atlantic Avenue for the filming.

In addition to Camden and Rockland, where the company has leased the Lincoln Street Center for the Arts and Education, filming will be done in Belfast, Rockport and Boothbay Harbor.

Smith said Stinson Seafood in Belfast will be used in one scene, and the Lincoln Street Center, a former school, will serve for classroom and auditorium scenes.

“We are also doing some water stuff,” Smith said, to be filmed at Rockland Harbor.

The film will be shot entirely in Maine, with many shots taking place inside houses in the area.

Smith said the company is negotiating for a national distributor for the film.

The director of “In the Bedroom” is Todd Field, a summer resident of Owls Head. The producer is Ross Katz.

Smith said a call for extras will be made the next several weeks for some scenes.
