Ferland, Metivier help Old Town upset Brewer

BREWER – Jamie Higgins drove in Justine Ferland with the winning run in the top of the seventh to help the Old Town Indians upset the previously unbeaten Brewer Witches in high school softball action at Coffin Field Friday night.

Ferland had reached on a single.

Meghan King paced Old Town with RBI singles in the first and third innings to back Sarah Metivier, who scattered five hits. Erin Ouellette and Erika Kennedy singled twice each for the Indians, who turned in some defensive gems in the outfield.

Jenny Higgins singled twice and had an RBI for Brewer. Sara Agouab rapped an RBI double.

Penquis 5, PVHS 2

At Howland, Megan Russell highlighted a three-run third inning with a two-run single and made the lead hold up by pitching a two-hitter for the Patriots.

Alicia Gerrish singled twice for Penquis of Milo, while Miranda Nichols and Sarah Gahagan hit run-scoring singles.

Toni Babineau led Penobscot Valley with an RBI single. Lindsay Wakefield also singled.

At Guilford, Angela Douglass held the Pirates to five hits while striking out nine and walking three to lead Deer Isle-Stonington.

Hollan Oliver singled three times and drove in two runs for the winners. Abby Cross and Douglass each singled twice and drove in a run.

Caterina Riitano doubled twice, singled and drove in a run for Piscataquis.

At Belfast, Kelsey Bryant paced the Lions with a single and a double.

Winning pitcher Morgan Crandall, Ashley Bryant and Sara McIntire had two singles apiece. Amber Billings, Kelsey Bryant and Mylie Collins hit consecutive doubles in the fifth inning.

Christina Wheelwright doubled and singled for Camden-Rockport.

At Rockland, Alex Pullen pitched a one-hitter, striking out 12 and walking two as the Black Bears of Readfield cruised.

Sika Stanton hit three singles and Pullen added two doubles for Maranacook.

Lindsey Grant singled for the Tigers’ only hit.

At East Sullivan, Jill Osier held the Lynx to two hits and as Sumner upset previously undefeated Mattanawcook Academy.

Osier and Rachel Philio singled for Sumner. Two of the Tigers’ runs were scored on errors. The third came on a sacrifice bunt by Jessie Hanson.

The Lynx’ Kari Vance pitched a two-hitter and struck out 10. Kylee Allen doubled and Allison McLaughlin singled for MA.

Bucksport 7, MDI 1

At Mount Desert, the Bucks took advantage of three MDI errors in the fourth inning to score five runs and put away the Trojans.

Annette Caswell hurled a one-hitter for Bucksport and struck out 15 with only three walks. She also hit two singles. Jana Richards added two singles and an RBI.

Sarah Miller’s RBI single in the fourth was Mount Desert Island’s lone hit.

At Blue Hill, Brooke Keniston knocked in two runs with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a groundout in the third. Mandi Allen stroked an RBI single.

Linsey Harmon doubled and singled, and Nikki Boutin singled twice for George Stevens Academy.

Michelle Murphy doubled and scored the Searsport run on an error. Chelsea Herrick added a double.

At East Corinth, Julie Clement’s two-run single sparked a three-run seventh and gave Central the margin of victory.

Crystal Strout hit two two-run homers, a single and a double to finish with five RBIs. Terri Underhill singled three times.

For Lee, Deidre Hamm hit a home run, a double and two singles with three RBIs. Kristin Bird had three singles and four RBIs.

At Husson College in Bangor, Kati Libby singled twice to help Orono edge John Bapst.

Molly Dupere hit an RBI single for the Red Riots, while Sue Hadley and Erica Breton added singles.

Laura Roach led the Crusaders with a double, a single and two RBIs. Amelia Mitchell-Storer singled twice.

At East Millinocket, Shannon Sirois pitched a no-hitter, including eight strikeouts, for Stearns.

Kristina MacKenzie notched two doubles, a single and drove in five runs for Stearns of Millinocket. Becca Saucier hit a double and a single (three RBIs) and Brooke Legassey added a single and three RBIs.

Lacking three seniors, Schenck remained hitless, but pitcher Lynn Farrington struck out five.

At Caribou, Megan Cole-Karagory led Caribou with two singles and a triple for two RBIs as the Vikings cruised.

Jessica Cyr doubled for Caribou.

Tonya Laughlin paced Hermon with two doubles and a single for two RBIs, Jodi Reynolds and Lindsay Duplisea each had a triple and two RBIs; Amy Porter doubled and signled; and Monica Rowe added two singles.

Bangor Christian sweeps

At Bangor, Lari Sobey pitched a no-hitter as the Pats won 22-1, then paced a potent 25-hit attack as Bangor Christian topped Greater Houlton Christian 26-13 in Game 2.

In the first game, Sobey struck out 10, walked three as the Pats cruised. Lisa Phinney hit a triple and two singles for the Patriots, while Jamie Theriault and Renee Mick each had two singles and a double. Alyssa Wiswell singled twice.

In the second game, BC’s Sobey and Mick each had three singles and a double. Merideth Moores and Nicole Pelletier each had a double and two singles. Alyssa Wiswell singled four times and Danielle Miller singled three times.

Megan Dago singled and tripled a triple for Houlton Christian.

At Belfast, Ben Cowan paced the Lions with two doubles and a single while Brandon Hurd hit two singles and a three-run homer. Matt Woodrow and Kevin Herbig helped out with a double and a single each.

Mike MacDonald doubled and singled for Camden-Rockport and Tom Massey singled twice.

At Howland, five pitchers combined on a five-inning no-hitter and Penobscot Valley parlayed six hits, four walks and an error into 12 second-inning runs.

Stu Morin, Benji Jipson, Brandon Soucier, Matt Mulligan and Brad Thibodeau struck out seven and walked 12 en route to the no-hitter.

Soucier had two singles and two RBIs, Keith Champion had a two-run double and Dustin Nicholson also doubled.

At Caribou, Ryan Garland drove in Donnie Hewes, who had doubled, with the go-ahead run for Hermon with a single in the sixth.

Garland hit a solo homer and another single for two RBIs. Ronnie Lane singled three times with an RBI, and Gavin Speaker doubled and singled with two RBIs.

Tristen Noyes doubled twice and Gerry Shanahan had two singles for two RBIs for Caribou.

At Mount Desert, Warren Chase led Bucksport with a triple, a single, and an RBI.

Abram Allard contributed two doubles for the Golden Bucks. Craig Harvey hit an RBI double.

Brad Dalton gave Mount Desert Island its only with a two-run home run. B.J. Greenleaf doubled for the Trojans.

At the Bangor Christian field, John Crisos hit a two-run single in the third inning as the Patriots opened a little breathing room against the Knights of Charleston.

Mark Reitsma posted a double and two singles, Dave Chrisos singled twice and Allen Easley tripled (2 RBIs). Nate Conley pitched a two-hitter, striking out seven.

At Greenville, a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh by Chris Lavigne gave Greenville the winning run.

Lavigne also hit a two-run single. Luke Knowlton rapped a two-run double. Freshman Rory Owens notched a double and a single for the Lakers.
